Split top hose - could it be the problem? TDV8

Last few days ive been getting error message "engine system fault"
It has got progressively more frequent, circa every 10 miles and limp home mode etc.

Ive got a family holiday in 6 days time and will be doing 500 miles each way, so I got under the bonnet today.

I removed the two top hoses to see if I could see anything (please dont shoot me down but I dont know the name of em)
anyway, the right side was a bit oily inside, nothing major, more just like thinned oil or wd 40 ish.

Anyway, i notciced the hose had a split about 6 inches long and another very small one on the other side.

I gave it a good wipe down with a cloth and taped it up with duck tape, I know its a temporary fix but it gave me the chance to try it out.

I did a 50 mile run on the M11 and got up to some decent speeds.

Car was fine, no error message or limp home etc.

Should i still go to dealers and pay 60 quid for a plug in or shall i just go and buy a new hose and put it on with fingers crossed?

FWIW I did ask my local general repair garage to look and his generic plug in said intermittent MAP fault (or something similar to this).

Thats what I thought but I wanted to feel confident this was the initial problem, although it does point this way.
Im a serial doubter by nature and I keep wondering if this is just a red herring but I connected the error message about map sensors with the hose problem?

Does anybody rate the silicone ones that are being marketed, I suppose I could last a couple of days while I make a mail order, it anybody has a link to a decent seller?
