STOLEN

New member to the forum....interested in some security feedback as my RRS was nicked at 3am this morning. Stolen without using keys - I have both fobs in my possession. Police told me this is not that uncommon - they are a hot target and the security system is obviously at least a little flawed. It was an SDV6, HSE Dynamic in Havana Brown and one of the first off the production line as it is/was just coming up for its 1st birthday with about 14k on the clock.

Are they that easy to pinch? Evil or Very Mad Big Cry

Mate, I am gutted for you. That is terrible.

Do a search on stolen, there is a long thread on here about it. Sadly, although it would be beyond me, its not hard for the scumbags which do it. Probably stolen to order. I hope you get it back today or not at all in case its been damaged. At least you weren't bashed for the keys.

We have the same thing here it but not nearly as bad. I parked my car in the underground public car park the other day while i was at work, left my iPhone in there, forgot to lock the car. It was all still there when I got back 8 hours later. Perth is isolated so its hard to move stuff on easily. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6
Gone - 2009 Buckingham Blue RRS 2.7 TDV6

Did wonder how long it would be before they moved on from lights and grills to complete cars. It begs the question, how do LR claim this is a Cat 1 alarm. It can't be if cars can be driven away without a key. Heart goes out to you, it's not a nice feeling, I came out to find my car on bricks in Hampstead, it turns out the local dealer had a set of masters lock keys stolen but never thought to warn locals. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱
Lots of other toys in the cupboard...😜

Feel for you, unfortunately it seem this is no an uncommon event.
It is not just JLR models, other high end marques are just as prone to cloning of the remote keys.
All manufactures need to deal with this issue as a matter of urgency.
Dread to think what this will be doing to our insurance premiums. MY13.5 Autobiography, Santorini Black, Privacy Glass. Gone
Driving a milk float for now.

I think it highlights one of the problems with the current vogue for keyless entry/starting. Never did understand why pressing a button was better than turning a key that also happened to disable a physical lock as well as starting the engine. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thanks for support. Yes, the police said the best defence in their view was a steering lock. So, back to my student days in Newcastle when when car(s) was stolen 6 times in 3 years........invariably brought return after a bit of joy riding......although they must have had a low threadshold for 'joy' if they found an Escort Diesel with 150k on the clock any fun to drive!!

I am also in agreement about keyless / electronic entry: makes life a little easier when carrying stuff and getting in and out....but it is becoming obvious they are just too easy for computer kids to get around.

Think what I would like is some ultimate 'cut off' switch. Classic and racing cars often have a complete electricity cut off switch somewhere.......you generally twist and take something out....pocket size, so not inconvenient. Without it, the thing simpy doesn't go. I suspect the problem with every day cars would be the clocks / electrics etc............but surely, there must be a better security system that is currently on offer? As several people have noted, this is clearly not a car that deserves such a high rating from Thatcham etc etc

Views on whether the tracking system I have fitted will result in anything available anon .......... but given what I know already, I fear this is not a car I will be seeing again in a hurry.

And I suppose the next question is do I want another......and if so, do I go for the same again, or move to the V8 diesel or petrol engine. And why isn't the 3 litre petrol engine available in the UK? Thoughts welcome on that too.......or does that go in another post?

United Kingdom 2006 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Bonatti Grey

What you need is an isolator switch, cut the + wire to the starter motor then extend the wire to the switch (located somewhere in the car) then connect it back to the wire that goes to the starter motor. The car will not start if the isolator key is not inserted but the rest of the electrical systems should be fine.

One of these:

Just an idea and I do not see why it would not work. 2006 RRS SC Bonatti Grey (the 55th car/van I have owned)

That's sort of what the ignition key used to do...the idea of having keyless entry/starting but needing to put a cut off key in to a slot in order to start just seems a bit perverse. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

^^^^^^ I agree with martyn and we use a similar idea on our Ktm enduro bikes as they don't have keys.

Also Clifford alarms used to come with a pin code you had to enter (used for anti hijack too)

I guess one of the issues with the Sport is that it takes a while for the computer systems to shut down after the car's been locked. Consequently putting an isolator switch in the circuit which would then switch of battery power immediately might upset it.

I was considering adding a switch in some hidden position that isolated the start/stop button (or for that matter in the live feed to the brake light switch). Keeping either of these two circuits 'open' would prevent engine starting but - I think- allow everything to shut down in its own good time.

I guess the 'brake switch' mod might be easier access and especially, if the car's under warranty and you wanted to remove it before it went to a dealer for servicing Shocked
