United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 HSE Lux Stornoway Grey
First two months of ownership

I bought a 2011MY HSE Luxury 2 months ago. It went in & had front & rear anti roll bar bushes fitted about three weeks ago under warranty. Last week I noticed the dreaded oil on the drive, I checked under the car only to see a lot of oil covering quite a large area. I took in to the dealers & they have told me that the active roll bar ? is leaking, they have informed me that the parts alone will be over £1500 ( thankfully the warranty runs out next Wednesday & so it is still covered) The car has only covered 30,000 miles & I was quite surprised that with such low mileage that this could happen. I was wondering up until now about extending the warranty, but now I will buying the Land Rover extended warranty. 2011 HSE Luxury, Stornaway Grey, Lux Pack, Privacy glass.

Sorry I also forgot to say that the dealer did a end of warranty check. They said that the passenger side front wheel is not running quite true. Added to that they say that non standard brake pads have been fitted & the discs have high & low spots on them. They say to replace the pads & discs would cost over £900. Again regarding the discs is this normal for a car with only 30,000 miles on it ? 2011 HSE Luxury, Stornaway Grey, Lux Pack, Privacy glass.

When you say "non standard" brake pads does that mean somehow the wrong type or just non OEM? Just wondering if those pads could have caused uneven wear on the discs.

When I sold my 2009 RRS it was on the same discs that it came with when new. They were lipped but still well within limits and they were evenly worn. That was after 49,000 miles and pretty sure they had several thousand miles left in them. It does depend on driving style though.

Also worth checking the discs/pads yourself or getting a second opinion. Some garages are creative about disc/pad problems sometimes.

I think they were the right pads, just not OEM. The dealership seem very fair with the way they have diagnosed the existing faults & rectified them under warranty, however I wondered if they were being slightly too cautious regarding the discs. I am due to pick it up at the start of next week so I will take your advice & get a second opinion. Thanks
Regarding the apparent front wheel running slightly out of true, again I will jack the car up & check it myself. 2011 HSE Luxury, Stornaway Grey, Lux Pack, Privacy glass.

Interesting to know how they diagnosed high and low spots, I have never seen a dti in a modern workshop and due to the nature of the disc fitting, impossible to test on the car as needs wheels on to run true and I'm sure they didn't strip the discs and put them on a lathe. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈

2011 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 HSE Bali Blue

I have a similar car to you, albeit in Bali Blue and it needs new discs and pads all around! I'm getting a quote from a local independent in Salisbury on Monday, I suspect it'll be less expensive than a dealer but I don't know whether there'll be warranty issues with the dealer; however, you would need to check if brakes are covered with the Land Rover one.

Not sure what your cars are, mine needed pads @ 15000 miles and discs once in 50k miles. Having said that, I used the car mainly for towing and got lazy in the end and just used the pedal instead of using gearbox to assist. Went with genuine front discs and pads £350 and copy rear discs and pads at £95. Factor in pair of pad sensors as usually brake or won't refit at £30.
They won't be covered under guarantee as are classed as consumables 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

Hi SalisburyLander, thanks for that. Westover Salisbury are quoting as I said in an earlier post over £900. I am also going to renew the genuine Land Rover warranty because after the start I have had to RR Sport ownership I can see eye watering bills possibly just around the corner !!!
If could let me know what the independent quote is I would appreciate it.
To answer the other question the car is a 3.0 HSE Luxury with only 30,000 miles on the clock.
Thank you for all your input & help. 2011 HSE Luxury, Stornaway Grey, Lux Pack, Privacy glass.

I agree with you Simple1, the cost of changing discs and pads should be a lot less than the £900 quoted by the local dealer!

I don't want to give the name of the independent garage but if you do a google for "land rover churchfields salisbury", then I'm sure you might find them!

There is an MoT test insurance upto £750 included in Land Rover warranty IIRC. That might be the only time the warranty could pay for discs if the discs are one of the reasons for test failure. Check the warranty policy document (online if you don't have the printed one) to be 100% sure though.

My MY10 RRS has now covered 36k miles - I was told from the second service (2 years old and c. 18k miles) it needed new discs and pads by a franchised dealer. I ignored them because they couldn't tell me convincingly how worn the pads were when I questioned them ("oh about 60% sir" - "so how much pad is left in mm" - "errr -what?")

I have just had the front pads replaced by an Indy (this month) - yes the front discs are lipped but that is not a problem - and I needed new pads and discs on the rear. The n/s rear pads had completely worn away but the o/s hadn't so the wear sensor hadn't triggered - which is why it went in as the back was squealing badly. Had I listened to the franchised dealer I would have had new pads and discs at 18k miles.

The brakes are now like new and it cost me £470.

I have recently moved over to Indy servicing as my RRS warranty expired (not a good reason, I know). My experience is that Indy's (or at least the one closest one to me) is at least a million times better than the three franchised dealerships near me, who have all been pathetic at servicing the car. Indy's (or at least the ones I have found) tend to be mechanics - whilst franchised dealers are fitters.

Rules around brake discs for mot are fairly easy and unless they are cracked, and the pads have a micron of lining, you will get an advisory which doesn't count as failed item under LR t&c's. It will cover suspension arms, bushes, ball joints etc even brake pipes.
I wouldn't be too concerned that your car needs discs at 30k, about the point I replaced mine, you are trying to stop in excess of 2.5 tonnes so things are going to wear...... Thumbs Up 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
