Peter Jakeman was airlifted to hospital after he was crushed by the stampeding animals in Ashbourne, Derbyshire.
The 62-year-old, from Callington in Cornwall was in a field off the A52 when the incident occurred.
He suffered blood loss and chest wounds as the animals knocked him to the floor.
It is thought Mr Jakeman was on a camping holiday in the area with his wife Hilary, 56 and their dogs.

These incidents seem to be more frequent and I now think twice before entering a field with my dog but never used to worry about it. My thoughts are with the family Sad

The British Mountaineering Council has issued advice that can be followed to reduce the possibility of an incident.

They say if you have a dog with you it should be kept on a lead.

If the cattle appear wary move away as carefully and quietly as possible.

If you feel threatened, let go of the lead. Try not to make any noise or fast movements and the cows should realise you are not a threat

United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Orkney Grey

I'm always wary around cattle but especially if there are any calves in the field with them. They can be extremely protective as you might imagine. Dogs will usually get a bigger response for obvious reasons. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
