Buying advice for a potential RRS owner!

Hello all.

Please excuse typical first-post-ask-question approach! Wink

I'm looking to pull your knowledge and experience regarding what to look out for when purchasing a RRS.

I'm currently looking at a 2005 RRS 4.2 V8 Supercharged, 77,000 miles and full service history. Not a private sale, it's with an independent dealer. Looks to be in good condition.

However I know nothing about these cars, so could you please let me know of anything I need to be aware of, common issues wise, for when I go and take a look and a test drive? I've heard about the suspension and parking brake issues. Is there anything else?

I appreciate these machines can cost a lot of money when they go wrong, and I don't want to start out with a Friday night job!

Much obliged!
Nick

Hi Nick, and welcome, I have not actually got the knowledge and experience you are looking for, as I have only had my RRS SC a month and to be honest I think I must have fallen lucky touch wood all aok.

The only thing that I find with this beast is the fuel tank does not stay full for long, still trying to work on that one. Laughing

I am sure one of the more knowledgeable people will be along with enough items that go wrong to put you off buying one but you are here know so look at every thing about the vehicle and go for a good test drive and try and do different roads i.e.: dual carriage way/motor way A/B roads don't be scared of putting it through its paces oh and enjoy yourself doing it, and if all is ok then buy it, like I said I have had mine a month and I still can't get rid of the smile on my face. Smile

Regards

Howler

The Sport has had the following changed from the standard Spec when it was new.

EXTERIOR - lower bumpers - lower door mouldings - side vents & door handles have been painted or changed therefore check the quality - look for peeling paintwork or badly masked lines. These items would have been tungsten grey when it came from the factory. The rear tailgate trim has also been painted check the lettering is black - not just painted black. The door handles would have been one piece.See if they have the cheaper covers stuck on or have been completely changed.
The rear lights have been moded / changed - these would not have been smoked & again the side repeaters have also been changed - upgraded.
The alloys need checking to see if they are original Stormers - look for the Landrover logo on the inside - fakes tend to crack - split.
INTERIOR - The interior has had the door card inserts changed along with the centre console hockey sticks - these may have been silver as per the trim around the Sat Nav - Infotainment System.
I have pointed out the above only as a guide to help but in no way is it meant to be off putting - £14k is a bloody lot of cash to spend - we are a genuine bunch on here - always willing to help - any questions Very Happy Thumbs Up 16MY Estoril Blue SVR.............

United Kingdom 2006 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Bonatti Grey

Hello mate, I recently brought a RRS 4.2 SC and it looked really good.

I was so fixed on getting the car I missed a few bits when looking around it.

I have so far changed the drivers door seal, main tailgate seal, replaced missing cubby tray, replaced missing door stop bump rubbers, changed damaged wheel arch protectors and changed side vents (they were different colours).

I have done a few other things like change the spare to a full size alloy, had tow electric's fitted, supercharger belts replaced, got a full service on it, fitted 4 new tyres, replaced missing items in boot tray etc.

I just recently noticed that the fuel flap does not lock so I will get that sorted soon.

Get a comprehensive warranty for the car then take it to a local indy garage and pay them to go through it with a fine tooth comb, if there is anything wrong with the car, hopefully they will find it.

I knew the car was going to cost me a few £££'s but then again it is 8 years old.

Will I keep throwing money at it ? Probably, it is such a great car to drive with loads of power, I have a massive grin factor whenever I drive it.

I do not use my RSS to commute to work, it is my toy to play with when I want to so the fuel consumption does not worry me. Currently about 13mpg but I do like the roar of the supercharger when my right foot hits that pedal.

These are great cars when everything is going alright, nightmare and expensive when they go wrong.

We could all drive around in small, eco friendly cars but hey, I own a RRS 4.2 V8 SC and I love it Very Happy 2006 RRS SC Bonatti Grey (the 55th car/van I have owned)

Thanks Martyn05. It's a car for the missus, got a little one on the way at the end of this month and she's always wanted a RRS, so as she finishes work in a week and won't be doing commuting miles any more, now is the time we can sensibly do it.
Wasn't planning on a 4.2L (I've had 3.2L sports cars in the past and know how quick the fuel gauge moves!) but the interior she prefers all seem to be in the 4.2s. Oh well! ;0)

Planning to go and see it on Wednesday.

Nick

Your little one will be well protected in a RRS, it will also give plenty of street cred !

You can quickly deactivate the passenger airbag so putting a baby carrier in the front should be no problem.

They do take some getting used to, the size of the car I mean. My misses has only driven ours (mine) once but I nagged her so much about keeping away from the kerbs and just how powerful it is. My misses drives a 1.1 Ford Ka so she was a little nervous about driving it, she is a good driver, I am just a poor passenger !

If you can afford it and are aware of the potential problems these cars can have, then I say do it.

I hope it all goes well for you Very Happy 2006 RRS SC Bonatti Grey (the 55th car/van I have owned)
