Centre Prop Bearing Question

I have had my car seven or eight months or so.

When I got it, I bunged it in Landranger in Stockport for a service and a once over. Since then I had the gearbox flush and the usual electrical/software upgrades everyone has from the mobile chaps on here.

Landranger told me the centre prop bearing rubber was goosed. He said no great urgency to fix it, as it "cant go anywhere", so to do it maybe when it has the next service.

He suggested a bearing at about £70? and an hour or two labour I seem to recall (it was a few months ago but I wont be far away with my recollection). Speaking to others, some recommended a full new prop instead. More money on the part, but less labour to fit.

It seems imbalance issues were a concern to some on the center prop bearing swap only? I used to do similar bearing/rubber middle prop swaps on Merc vans years ago [that had much longer double jointed props] and we never had any issues with prop balancing as long as one marked the prop with chalk and put it back in the same position. Are these the same or am I missing something?

I did some searching and reading on the site, but didn't seem to come up with a definitive answer. Is changing just the centre bearing OK? [assuming done by a competent specialist] Or do the gurus here recommend a new prop instead?

More importantly, I am planning to drive to France for a long weekend at the end of the month [gotta keep the Muscadet stock topped up and wifey likes the clothes shopping]. Is a 1000 mile trip OK with a "goosed" centre bearing that exhibits no symptoms? Or so I need to seek out trade members close to the M20 in case I limp back off the tunnel with a dash full of lights and a knocking prop? Laughing

I hear a bit of a grumble/whine from the region, but no symptoms as such. It was the garage that said it was knackered, and I don't doubt their honesty.

Just when you know something needs fixing, it plays on your mind. Symptoms or not.

I tried changing a few of them. Could not get the inner CV cage off the shaft. Every one ended up breaking, trying to pull it off the shaft
