Have had my RRS for nearly two months now and love it. However in the colder mornings it seems to struggle to start. I am told that they are a nightmare to change and my indie garage has said they wouldn't touch this job as they have a habit of breaking.
Any suggestions of what to do.

Suck it and see. If they are too tight, then leave well alone.

There are a few theories behind removing glow plugs...

Soak for weeks with a penetrating fluid, allowing it plenty of time to work its way down the threads of the plugs.
I don't think it would work its way down past the threads, but who knows

Run for a month or so with 2 stroke oil/premium diesel/injector cleaner. The oil helps the fuel burn cleaner, and also helps clean off carbon deposits. Whether it makes a difference

Vibrating impact gun, specifically for glow plug removal. They are torque limited to 40-50Nm, to prevent them from snapping, but the impact action helps shock the plugs loose, and break off the carbon deposits. Have had varying degrees of success with these...

On the other hand, I have had cars where all 6 have come out no problem at all. Only one way to find out

I have put some cleaner in the fuel and will see what happens. With you on the plus gas theory.

Its one of those pot luck jobs, they either come out or snap off as DM says you take a chance, some members have left snapped off ones in rather than having to remove the body to get the heads off..

It seems to be starting better since I put the cleaning fluid in the tank, but it hasn't been all that cold.
So time and temperature will tell.
Spoke to my indie garage again today and they have put me in touch with a company that have a removal tool that takes seized glow plugs out and even a mechanic that works for RR suggested them too.
So will play it by ear for now and see what the cold temperature brings.

Did my BMW 330d by taking as much plastic off the engine as possible then running the car idle until up to temperature, killing it, remove the manifold, cover them in loads of plus gas and get a long socket on them as soon as possible.

3 came straight out. 1 needed a bit more of a twist. The last two I had to repeat the process but only as I wasn't super confident.

The key is heating the engine up as some of mine would deffo have snapped if I tried too hard cold. You can use a torque wrench if you have one set to the right setting as I did but in the end didn't use it as they came out reasonably easily.

Surprised to hear a garage say they wouldn't do it though??

Are the LR ones particularly prone to shearing then?

Warm engine theory/cold engine...Ive tried both. I think warm is better. It is about being gentle and not forcing it.

the only one I had snap was a new one. I used a extractor tool to get it out...all fine - I now refit them with copper slip (only a little). Mike

they had receipts for all work done but did say had held back the one for the heater plugs being replaced as did not want to scare anyone off, as the indi had said £300 as long as they come out if not then £???
