I put down a £1000 deposit back in October for an RRS and delivery is planned for March. The dealer has just asked for a further £4000 deposit - Is this normal practice ? I have been buying new cars for 20 years and never needed to put anymore than £500-£1000 to hold one. Any ideas ?

I've always put a £5k deposit down.

Pay the rest on collection.

It does seem odd to ask more unless they have had deals fall through in the past but to the best of my knowledge any deposit is refundable if the buyer changes his/her mind I don't see the benefit.

£2,000 for me. Non-refundable if cancelled. Regards

I agree it just seemed unusual. I have never cancelled an order before. I always thought the deposit was a gesture of your willingness to buy and not really a reflection on what the car cost, after all its only a 1.5% which is hardly anything more than a gesture. I'll pay the extra as its not a problem I was just curious as to whether anyone else had experienced the same.

I wouldn't pay it Suppose the dealer went bust, or is planning to The £1000 you have already paid is more than enough. Don't pay another penny till you collect your car.

I was only asked to pay £500. No.....£500 is the norm and it is refundable.

ALWAYS pay the deposit with your credit card. It then gives you more safeguards if things go wrong later on.

If I were you I would point blankly refuse and ask to speak to the Dealer Principle.

It will be a cashflow situation......ask 100 people to pay another £4K, if 50 do that's £200K in the bank.

Be one of the 50 who say no. They are just trying it on.
