Driving in floods and gales

Following on from an earlier thread about fatuous winter motoring advice dished out by lazy ignorant journos at this time of year...

You may enjoy this outstanding example from my local rag under the above headline and arranged as a series of stab points including the below which I swear is verbatim:

"* Air intakes on new cars are lower than they used to be so don't underestimate the power of wind gusts - a 60mph gust creates four times the force of a 30mph wind."

WTF? Rolling with laughter 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

30mph

Quote:

FORMULA USED:
F = A * (Ce * Cq * Qs)
SQ FT:
4 sq ft
WIND PRESSURE:
4.163 lbs per sq ft
TOTAL FORCE:
16.653 lbs
ELEMENTS:
Ce = 1.39
Cq = 1.3
Qs = 2.304

60mph
Quote:

RESULTS
FORMULA USED:
F = A * (Ce * Cq * Qs)
SQ FT:
4 sq ft
WIND PRESSURE:
16.653 lbs per sq ft
TOTAL FORCE:
66.613 lbs
ELEMENTS:
Ce = 1.39
Cq = 1.3
Qs = 9.216

So 30mph creates 4lbs of pressure but 60mph creates 16

Four times as much Whistle

With respect Mr Pink you may have missed the point. What has the height of the air intake got to do with gusts of wind? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Air intakes have become lower because of styling, anyone remember th epoor owners of the earlier Reanauly Esapce ? they would suck up water frequently.

As for the complicated explanation Yawn Since schoolboy physics teaches air resistance (and which is a form of kinetic energy) is proportion to the square of velocity and guess what the square of 4 is 16 so you didn't need all the guff about Cd etc !

The low air inlet thing is more of a worry when driving in water I would say. I think the journo probably took notes whilst half cut and got himself confused in the cold light of hangover. Rolling with laughter 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

My guess is he either forgot to spec wading sensors and is trying to guage depth, or he dropped something and is looking for it. Either way it's odd behaviour... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I Think that he maybe is a former Q7 driver,
and have just decided that this is a good spot
to let Kois out. Smile

The only reason I can think he would open the door is if he was letting water out Shocked

With a wading depth of 700mm? he has either overdone it or someone forgot to seal something on the production line Whistle Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW
