Charging light on Dash

Apologies if this has been covered before, but the charging light (red battery symbol) has just come on on my 2005 2.7 diesel. I have not yet checked for charging, which is the obvious cause to persue, but I seem to remember reading recently that other systems can be marked by this warning light too. Does any one know if this is the case?

Thank you
Adam..

It will be the alternator. Get a new one from advanced factors and it's about 30 mins to change (v6) think the v8 is a bit more complicated. Bodsys Brake Bible

Thank you both for your advice.

Actually, the light came on on my way to work yesterday and went off as I returned home last night. I have seen this on other cars and I think it is putting me on notice of an impending failure. I will get a new unit lined up today. The car is approaching 100,000 miles, so not unreasonable, i suppose. I will be doing the cam belts too very shortly.

Thanks again
Adam..

Might be worth getting the alternator checked before you shell out for a new one, but the signs are pointing towards a new one. Sad
