A Day in the Country...

Yesterday, my car broker invited a group of his long standing customers out to celebrate the 5th anniversary of his company. The venue for the day was what they call "A Day in the Country" at Aynho in Oxfordshire.

www.adayinthecountry.co.uk if you're interested.

Spent a great day in the boiling hot sunshine, doing a bunch of activities and generally spending a good day in the company of some fellow petrolheads.

First up was some 4x4 offroading. Very tame stuff really in an old Defender 90. Was first a bit wary of having to do some offroading with a manual gearbox after driving an auto for the past couple of years, but with the box in low ratio it was all first gear stuff with no need for the clutch at all whisty moving! Had a lady instructor too, who apparently also teaches at LREs. A couple of circuits of a woodland track and we went a bit further afield when I took another go when we had some time to kill.

Then onto a spot of clay pigeon shooting. I'd hadn't done this for a long time but thoroughly enjoyed it. It was supposedly an "easy" gun (20 gauge, so said the instructor), but I was picking them all off like a goodun. This is something I'd consider taking up as a hobby - really good fun and found myself getting quite competitive.

Next, some timed laps of a dirt circuit in some dune buggies. Again extremely good fun but for the rev limiters kicking in way too soon. Went off to lunch, which was a really good buffet and then back out for the afternoon's activities.

Started out with some field archery, which I'd never done. For anyone who doesn't know what it is, you take a route through woodland and get directed towards target "animals" which you have to shoot from various distances with your pointy sticks. You're scored on your performance. Then onto pistol shooting... Smith & Wesson replica air pistols at targets set up 10 or 15 yds away. OK, but not particularly thrilling. Especially when your compressed air cylinder runs out half way through a round.

From there went on to do a spot of fly-fishing. They have a fishing lake, populated with brown & rainbow trout, a few perch and tench. I have to say I don't see the attraction.... a) I was crap at it and kept on getting my line caught up in surrounding bushes and b) I didn't catch anything!! Even if I could manage the technical aspects, I'm not sure I see why people get so passionate about it. I'm sure the instructors were a little frustrated with my lack of excitement Wink Last event of the day was a clay pigeon flush competition. We all got into groups of 3 and had to take out sets of clays that were sent out over us, the group score being what counted.

At the end of the day, prizes were awarded for each event and also for the highest performing individual. Guess what, yours truly won the 4x4 event prize (bottle of champers and a branded travel mug!) and was also in the winning team for the group flush event!

Some nice metal in the car park. Another RRS (the broker's car - Cairns blue diesel HSE), an SL350, a Bentley GT, a couple of FFRRs and we were promised an M5, M6 and a Gallardo Spyder too but the owners never got there (time is money, money is time etc). Took my camera only to find batteries dead when I got there, so no decent pics of anything unfortunately.

If anyone's thinking of setting up a corporate day there for their own businesses or if we as a forum wanted to do a day out there with all that kind of thing, it'd be a great place to do it. Staff were top notch - very friendly and very knowledgeable about their subject, food was fantastic (served bacon sarnies for brekky and a very cakey afternoon tea as well, with cold boxes at each event site with water/soft drinks in) and the location was great too.

As you might be able to tell, I thoroughly recommend it.

I have no clue yet about cost/dates.

I expect it will get cheaper the more you have, so the more interest we can generate the better. I'd also suggest we didn't do it in the depths of winter as the events are all 100% outside... mightn't be so much fun in the pi**ing rain.

I'll contact them and find out some more.

Watch this space! Very Happy

Is this happening?

I'm interested, mainly depending on when Question As it would have to be on a day off for me. No hols left. But as I have days off during the week I have a greater degree of flexability in that respect. Weekends are difficult as I don't get many off.

So let me know the options. TDV6 - gone
TDV8 - gone
