I would imagine a lot more people will chance it and not bother taxing it as any local bobby etc wont ever be able to tell if a car is taxed.

this is actually already in place. A traffic patrol car can video number plates and a system linked to a database tells them if a car has no tax, insurance, MOT etc. But, local cops, traffic wardens etc don't have this ability.  RR Sport Supercharged Vesuvius Orange 4.2 V8 First edition

This is only if its equipped with ANPR cameras, which your local bobby on foot is unlikely to be.

Abolish VED and use tax on fuel - more miles/fuel = more tax - less miles/fuel = less tax - Fair and Simple

I expect they're hoping most people will take up the direct debit route of payment. They they'll announce tax increases as a monthly increase - "your VED is going to increase by only £5 a month from April" sounds so much nicer to the great unwashed than "we're putting it up by £60 next year". Don't forget that the VED also means they check MOT and insurance provision at the time of VED issue. It's supposed to be a safety check.

I think they should go down a route of central insurance. Add a levy on the price of fuel and that covers third party claims. That way the scrotes who don't insure are covered for what they do to others. The rest of us can then elect to pay for comprehensive insurance if we so wish to cover damage to our cars that we might inflict ourselves. Sure, that means we all pay a bit more but at least there will be no "hit by an uninsured driver" issues any more. It'll probably be cheaper overall than the current system of coppers pulling them, they go to court, get fined a few quid they don't have anyway. The cost of all of that being borne by us anyway. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Makes sense to me Muddy, not so sure our supercharger friends would agree though

The various State jurisdictions in Aust have been doing away with our equivalent of tax disks over the past few years and increased the number of cop vehicles and cameras fitted with number plate recognition to the point the almost every police vehicle has a camera and linked to the database.

Drive an unregistered vehicle as you soon get caught.

Large bits of the UK are covered in ANPR cameras anyway. They hardly need to give them to every copper. For example, lots of car parks have number plate recognition systems as part of their ticketing system. Very easy to tie the ANPR system in to that and check every car that goes through the car park.

The traffic monitoring systems use partial number plate recognition to monitor traffic flows. What are the odds that these get "upgraded" to full ANPR level and are used to check legality of vehicles too? I'd say it won't be long. Average speed camera system in road works (and increasingly on other bits of road these days) could also be used to do this.

In Switzerland the plates are tied to the person, you go through your life with the same numberplate, in general.

To have the plates you have to have insurance.

I converted my diesel RRS to run on an environmentally friendly mixture of caribou fat and baby seals oil

in Spain, car tax is linked to the car, which is in turn linked to your NIE (National Identity Number) which is also linked to your bank account (everything is linked), therefore if you don't pay after 3-4 years they can just take the funds from your account ! Simples ! Your Vignette nearly got me in trouble though - crossed the border from france and did know where to get one and border was very busy so drove to Hotel in Zurich and asked concierge - only to be told I could of been fined on the spot if stopped - had to buy one at the airport because everywhere else was closed before we could continue journey to Tuscany next morning

Wont hold it against you though - loved Zurich and stopped there a few days on way back
