What to look out for?

Hi All

Firstly I should introduce myself and say hi!!! I live up near Durham and have decided a change of car would be good for the winter.

I'm looking at the RRS TDV6 2.7 HSE. What should I be looking out for and if looking at something around 2006 what should be due for replacement?

Any help or pointers would be great as I keep hearing stories that it will cost me a fortune when it goes wrong?

Richard

Has been asked many times but unfortunately no-one has yet put all the information together in the form of a buyer's guide so you'll have to use the search facility on this forum to find previous threads.

However - the best advice I've seen is 'does it look loved?'. These cars are complex and can be troublesome particularly if the owner doesn't care for it or is ignorant; or both.

Have a look on the for sale and wanted section of the forum. There are some really lovely examples for sale advertised by long standing forum members right now. I'd much rather buy privately from an enthusiast than from a dealer who frankly won't really give a Censored about anything other than getting his grubby hands on your hard-earned money.

Best of luck 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Thanks for the quick response, I thought I couldn't see a buyers guide. Some good advice and I'll take a look at the for sale section.

Are their any common faults to look out for?

What is the main thing that can go wrong that will cost me mega bucks?

Hi, yes we really ought to write a buyers guide Embarassed

OK are you sure you want to know this?

At least three massively horrible things can happen; in no particular order they are:

1. The turbocharger can fail and replacement is expensive both in terms of parts and labour. £1,000 for the turbo plus 10 hours or so labour plus any other parts. Sometimes the turbo breaks up and totals the engine so you'd be looking at about £9k for a new engine. TDV8 has two turbos.

2. Some TDV6 engines have a known problem with the main bearings failing which results in total engine failure.

3. Some TDV6 engines have a known problem with part of the oil pump housing casting that supports one of the cambelt pulleys; it shears off resulting in total engine failure (does not apply to TDV8)

1 and 2 are relatively unusual and could happen to any engine to be fair. 3. can be avoided by fitting an uprated oil pump at the same time as the cam belt change which is due at 105,000 miles (but cautious owners do it at about half this mileage or even less) 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Hi

Thanks, that's the sort of info I was after, there is a lot of talk about the car tax and some tdv6 are cheaper than others to tax?

Depends what year 2.7 you get. After March 2006 (from memory) road tax was a smidgen under £500 a year, pre 2006 it is probably half that.

You need to take Paddi's tale of woe with a pinch of salt.

Its true there are horror stories but that's the nature of 'User Forums' - there is no objective statistic on here to say whether the incidents on here warrant the term 'some'.

Loads of owners have had no issues, two of my local dealers have never replaced an engine - V6 or V8 and only a couple of turbos (don't forget the RRS came on the market on 2005. They have had to do suspension bushes, suspension compressor, the odd alternator and batteries.

A good measure is that the cost of an extended warranty on a RRS is more or less the same as say a BMW X5, Audi Q7 or Merc ML etc

Get the owner to allow you to get it inspected and try and get one with good documented service records. Be realistic and keep some of your budget for a good service and check over.

Hi,

As mentioned as you are at the 7 year old mark it's belt change time (105k or 7 years) unless they've already been done so that's a buying consideration. Altho' Flack on this forum does a good deal if you are North West based. Mine to be done shortly.
The oil pump housing needing changing at the same time depends on if it is an 07 model year, if it is 06 model year you are fine, Disco Mikey on here kindly confirmed from my VIN that my 56 plate was an 06 model year so I was OK and you could do similar.

I've just had the air suspension compressor replaced which is a common fault, but it didn't just fail it was still driveable until it was sorted. Again Flack did this for a good price and everything is good again.

People on this forum have a vast knowledge and are always willing to help which has been great for me.

All I can say is that I love my RRS, yes the road tax is £500 and it doesn't do 60 mpg, but for something that can fit all the family in and all our gear and offer ultimate luxury and turns heads I can't find anything else, go for it! 2006 Range Rover Sport 2.7 TDV6 HSE.

Thanks again, there's one in the for sale section which has need reduced to £15k and looks nice.

To be honest, while there are some specific areas and these cars are complex and have lots of electronic systems.

They are no different to a number of cars and the things to consider are the same eg: is it serviced, how well is it maintained, does everything work, are there and knock's clunks, does it drive well has it had any damage or replacement parts

Get yourself a service schedule and make sure the age/mile items have been carried out - you will never spot everything Mike

Rich I just took delivery of my 'new' 2006 RRS TDV6 HSE today....I had a nice drive down from Perth to my home in Glasgow. I spent the first 20 minutes or so listening for any knocks, creaks, banging or whatever coming from the car, nothing unusual was heard...so the radio went on and I enjoyed the rest of the drive home. I think a person could soon drive themselves straight into the nuthouse reading through some of the horror stories regarding these cars and what can go wrong with them. Like mse said in his post above you are never going to spot everything, check the service history is sound, take it for a test drive, if it runs well you have a decision to make. That's about as much advice as I can offer, like any used car you pay your cash and you take your chances. Just my tuppence worth. Thumbs Up
