United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Lux Orkney Grey
Second Service

Lookers kindly contacted me this morning to point out that the sport will soon need its second service, now as far as I am aware that is still some six weeks away, but as the young lady informed me, they are very busy at the moment and are booking in for September already Shocked . Out of curiosity I asked how much for the service "well it is a big service" she said "and they do flush the engine because of all the dirty oily build up and change all the filters" "yes" I said "but how much is it going to cost me" £790 was the reply. After a sharp intake of breath I informed her that I would not be taking Lookers up on their kind offer. So I guess what I am getting at is do you think 790 quid is reasonable to change the oil and a few filters? Oh I and I forgot to also flush the nasty oily deposits out of an engine that has done 16000 miles. 12MY RRS Orkney Grey HSE Lux

To be honest i dont think nearly £400 is good for a first or any service, so £800 is just taking my urine. Mike

'Its a big service they do flush the engine' Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

So the bimbos on reception are now giving customer's advice on maintenance Shocked

Engine flush is just a con to make a bit more money out of naive customers in the same way that adding a few mls of cheap windscreen washer fluid and charging £15 for it or offering to coat your new vehicle in some rubbish product claimed to give the paint extra protection and charging £500 for it; is a total rip-off.

So-called engine flushing comprises dumping a can of detergent in your engine along with it's old oil, running the engine for a few minutes (doubt if they even bother with that) and then draining the sump or more than likely just sucking out the old oil through the dipstick hole. Supposedly this wunder additive has cleaned/dissolved any oil sludge and helped it drain out.

So now when the garage fill the sump with fresh oil it will already be 'cut' with the residual wunder detergent and not be able to lubricate the engine properly. Marvellous.

Some will argue that engine flushing can be useful for a very old and badly maintained engine - but for a nearly new one? IMHO definitely not.

As for the cost - are they having a giraffe? I'd check the service schedule because if as you say it is just an oil change and filters and 'inspection' of lots of other things how they justify that cost for an hours work and £50 worth of parts is beyond me. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

I would argue engine flushes can be harmful on old engines by exposing and 'attacking' seals etc...but I agree with what you say. Mike
