plooms of white smoke after 2h idle

hi everyone i am just a bit worried as i am just about to take my 06 rrs tdv6 on holiday and its going to be doing 1000 mile towing a caravan but today i fitted a reversing camera to the caravan and whilst i did it i left my car running hooked up to my caravan to try and put some charge in the vans battery after about 2hours when i driven off out of the first corner i noticed plooms of white smoke behind me then i stopped at another junction and it was bellowing out i set off again and give it a good boot it then cleared and i checked it when i got home there was no smoke and it was normal can anyone shed any light on this should i be worried about my holiday ??
thanks in advance lee

That's what happens when you idle these for a long time. No idea why, but probably just that the engine isn't hot enough to burn off whatever it is that causes it. But its normal and shops be fine for your trip unless you're getting some fluid loss somewhere else? Bodsys Brake Bible

Firstly - tick over wont really put much charge through anything...it will charge a little, but i wouldnt run the car to try and charge the battery etc.

The white smoke will be mostly condensation in the exhaust system and maybe some unburnt fuel etc - the engine will not be hot enough and will not get and keep warm (unless its a really hot day) on tick over, to keep itself and the entire system warm (which is why when your stuck in a queue for a long time in the cold, eventually the engine wont be able to warm the heater exchange and thus you and why the LR's have the fuel heaters to aid warm up times)

A cold system isnt healthy for a car im afraid...

Next time you want to charge you van battery, could i suggest a trickle charger? Mike
