Poor call quality and Bluetooth

Hi, has anybody got very poor call quality when using the hands free.?
There is lots of breaking up and general poor quality that makes it almost unuseable. Wondering if a Bluetooth update unit for the boot will help?
The phone is an iPhone 4S and it is for a mates 56 hse. He has asked me to order a new Bluetooth unit for him, he works offshore and I won't have access to the car until he returns in a few days, so can't swap them over. Just trying to save him some money if it won't cure the problem. If anyone can help that would be great

Hi Ady, the phone works fine all the time until you connect to the hands free, then it instantly becomes terrible to the point you can't hold a conversation longer than a few words so guessing it must be the connection between the phone and the car. MY16 AUTOBIOGRAPHY Indus silver with some toys

Could be you BT module Idea , might be worth getting in touch with 'Bodsy' on here and seeing if he'll loan you a BT unit that you could swap over (easy to do as it's in the boot side compartment) and see if that cures your problem. Confused ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

Hi Rigsby, just caught up with this and also noticed your other thread.

I'd have to ask what volume the phone is set to when on a call. I find that anything above 15 and the quality starts to deteriorate.
Does it recognise normal voice recognition commands in his car?

Its possible that the microphone wires are dodgy (relatively common) so you may need to change replace the two wires that go up to the microphone from the back of the radio unit.

I have swap units here, but of course if your mates unit is actually faulty, I'd have to charge for a new replacement unit. They're £200+vat from LR.

I could do a software update on his to see if that fixes the problem, so he gets his own unit back.

It could also be that the ECU's are confused amongst themselves, whilst unlikely to cause this issue, there would be no harm in doing a hard reset. (it's free!)

Disconnect the battery terminals and short them together (not on the battery!) for 20 seconds. Then see what happens when he next makes a call.

drop me a PM if you want to discuss any of the other options on units etc. Thumbs Up

Cheers

Hi Bodsy, thanks for the reply. Not sure what the volume is set on but he likes his music loud !!! Had a message from him earlier and he is back Friday so can have a better look. Don't think he bothers with voice commands and to be honest nor do I, it never seems to work very well. Think the volume is the first check, then battery leads or microphone wires. I will let you know how it goes and give you a shout re software upgrades or replacement if needed thanks again Rigsby MY16 AUTOBIOGRAPHY Indus silver with some toys

Morning Al, I don't know who pulled your chain.... anyway sounds like we have got a couple of things to try before we replace the unit itself. Are you back Wednesday? MY16 AUTOBIOGRAPHY Indus silver with some toys

Just a quick update, It would seem the main problem is down to the volume level that is set in the car, it is now down to 18 and seems to be much clearer with less distortion. Al is going to see how it performs for the next couple of days but I suspect it will be ok now. Thanks for all your help guys, Rigsby and Al MY16 AUTOBIOGRAPHY Indus silver with some toys

He may need to drop the volume a touch more to stop you hearig yourself talking to him, but generally it should fix it. Thumbs Up Bodsys Brake Bible
