There will be plenty of people that come along and tell you to get the tdv8 because it is far more superior to the tdv6. It all depends how much performance you want. If you want performance get the tdv8 if your budget allows, if your not too bothered a tdv6 is perfectly adequate for cruising about day to day

IMHO the 2.7 is underpowered and will proably have been worked hard to meet the owners expectation - increasing wear/damage so I would go for a 3.0 or 3.6 as they are more suited to the RRS Thumbs Up Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Still hoping for a S2 one day!

Had 2 V6 and a V8. Both have there own problem. A chipped V6 goes well enough but a 3.6 is really quite acceptable standard.
The V8 is dearer to run as its heavier, so tyres brakes and suspension suffer more.
If you are buying either, take out a decent warrentee and get it checked by someone who knows their onions before you buy.
It's never going to have the get up and go of an M3 so drive both and see which suits best. Good luck Thumbs Up 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱
Lots of other toys in the cupboard...😜

Its sounds like that the 2.7 would be suitable for your needs, my first sport was a 2.7 HSE, i had it remapped and it was plenty powerfull enough, it sounds like you have already been put off the 3.6 with some horror stories floating around but i don't think it is anymore unreliable than the 2.7 but what would put me off the 3.6 is that there isn't any replacement engines available at the moment should your engine go pop, which a few have already done. Shocked If you can stretch to the 3.0 L then do so, you will get the far better interior with a good engine and better mpg than the other two models. Thumbs Up Good luck with whatever you choose.

When you say under powered, in what way?
Surely it depends upon what/where and how you drive does it not?

The average speed on my car is under 30mph due to the fact that 99.9% of my driving is around town therefore a v8 would be a complete waste of money.

Also, as I'm over the age of 21, traffic light Grand Prix's are a distant memory Laughing

Underpowered as in it felt sooooo slow !

I drove the 2.7 and it felt like you had to wait a few seconds for acceleration...

The 3.6 is a different beast altogether... much more a drivers car....in my opinon Very Happy 2009 3.6 TDV8 HSE Santorini Black

It's about being able to overtake safely, pull trailers more easily etc. Oh, and a bit of "willy waving" in the the pub too Rolling with laughter 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

177 bhp and 2.5 tonnes is never going to be quick but the lack of umph to overtake was dangerous as was the throttle response. The old V6 suffered from a major delay between pushing the loud pedal and engine responding. Making pulling out of a junction or roundabout a bit of a lottery. Was never sure if it was gearbox or engine until the car was mapped and this characteristic disappeared.
If your pottering round town at 30 you will never notice the lack of urge.
As a complete sidebar, mate of mine has a V6 Disco with a manual box. What a difference that makes to car, shame it was never fitted to the Sport Confused 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

The 2.7 is not without its issues, as is the 3.6.

Personally, I would have the 3.6 TDV8 all day long.

Goes like stink, sounds great, reasonably cheap to get a bit more power out of (320bhp with a generic map)

And a body off is not as drastic as it sounds. The cars were designed to come apart easily. Can have the body off in only 2 hours Thumbs Up

I defo think for your needs the 2.7 is fine, both cars have there problems as do all land rover products but that isn't why we buy them. To be safe your best to expect problems with either engine so get a warranty on the car most suited to your needs, drive a few of each to find which one you like
