I'm confused - there's only a light dusting on the roads in that video - why the massive tailbacks?

Road tax used to go towards road construction and upkeep, now it is just absorbed in to the general pot to be used for not disabled to get cars and three hundred quid a week
A trip round local roads near me reveals pot holes, dissolved road surfaces and three hundred yards of Armco railing being built where the road is straight and in 30 years, have never seen an accident.
Councils response to sons call about a pot hole that shattered a wheel was they were not aware of it even though it had white paint round it.
Like many I pay £475 a year for road tax and £300 a time when I have to replace a buckled wheel and get nothing for my money

Sorry, rant over Whistle 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

To be fair to the gritters, when it snow heavy like it has there, salt is useless, because as soon as they put it down it gets swept away by the traffic, and when there is so much traffic the gritters can't get through to plough or grit it again, i blame all the merc's and bmw's with all their electronic gadgets for causing the traffic jams when they become stuck on anything worse than a wet road. Whistle Salt only works on a snow covered road providing its not still snowing as heavy as it was there. This country hasn't got a clue how to drive when it snows thats why you have situations like this. Shocked

It amazes me that countries like Austria and Switzerland have no problems. Ok they have snow every year but even BMW and Mercs make it up hills, simply because from November to April they have to use studded snow tyres.
It always seems councils tell us on the news, that we have had the wrong type of snow, fact is we don't have enough snow annually for councils to invest in types of machinery to keep roads clear and as Ady points out, the drivers who can prepare and cope with a dusting of snow. If we had metres of the stuff it's understandable. But in other countries, they close and clear roads then reopen. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

On the radio this morning, the relevant spokeperson said that every one of their gritters was out and had been all night.

Of course, if those people had the correct tyres for the conditions they'd be ok...gritting doesn't help in heavy snow fall. Winter tyres do. Whistle

Oh, and VED doesn't go to the highways agencies. It hasn't done so since 1936 thanks, in part, to Winston Churchill.

But if people drove to the conditions and prepared their vehicles accordingly there would be much less of this sillyness! 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

And they wouldn't have the money to do so anyway, even if we did have lots of snow. Everyone would like more gritters but no one wants to pay for them. Same old story.

If you go to your local County Council website you'll find information about the routes they currently grit. There'll be hundreds of miles of roads and they'll have a handful of vehicles to do the work. It's no wonder it's often not as effective as some would like.

And then, of course, you get the bits of road that they can't grit because the numpties on low profile, "high performance" summer tyres have already blocked the roads and they can't get through.

Do we need gritters for this? (and how are they supposed to get through anyway - it's nose to tail)

I bet that's caused by some idiot driving like a c Censored t, having a shunt and then causing everything to stop.

Drive to the conditions and be considerate to other road users and, amazingly, this sort of thing wouldn't happen nearly so much.

I do wonder why it's the South East that seems to struggle so much with snow... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

That's not snow... Sunday was green fields and sunny weather... This is Monday morning;

I drove down to Arabba, Italy, 3 weeks ago and it was easier to drive in the alps than at home in southern Sweden. No wind that moves snow around. Not to mention that in Sweden we are required to use winter tires from December to March. I have Pirelli Scorpion without studs. Going home I was actually trailing a TDV8 RRS from UK...

British and snow seems to go together aswell as british sausages and meat...

Perhaps Local Authorities should stop gritting and just fit appropriate tyres to their vehicles and emergency service vehicles. That way everyone else would stay at home (or buy proper tyres) and those who need to get around can do. Save a shed load of money...
