Winch Thingy

So, what do I need to do to get a winch on the front of my HSE? Buy winch, attach? So what type of winch, does it need brackets etc Help!

Winching would be getting myself out of holes and pulling things out of bogs

I read about front parking sensors but they don't work on mine at the moment and a lump of metal in the front will help with London parking anyway Wink

You will need a number of things.

1. A winch - Warn 9.5 XP (I think!)
2. A Winch mount - again available from Warn but Uncle Ray might be able to supply.
3. A 2nd battery - There's a space for this under the bonnet
4. A Sump guard -
5. A pile of cash

You will also need to cut a great big hole in your front bumper.

I did it a few years back - looks great and works well but it's not cheap. As mentioned you will lose 2 parking sensors from the front bumper but if you keep these connected and wrap them up in putty you can get the other 2 working properly. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Had one on my G4 RRS

Excellent although to bo honest I did not use it that much.

Basically a special warn mount, warn winch(other makes are available) & a hacksaw to cut away part of the bumper Exclamation

Mine only had a single battery which was okay but you need to make sure its a good battery or it will suffer quite quickly.

Good Luck Paul

Its a land rover kit (incidentally made by warn) but i dont think you can buy the mount from warn.

If you buy the warn mount or Land Rover mount, the spacing are all set for that winch..

And before someone says " but the winch foot print are the same" - yes a few winches share the same bolt spacings, but you need to consider motor position to fairlead location...ask me how i know!!

The winch is the one listed, best bet is to have a look at the genuine fitting instructions.

As an aside - many people will say you need a second battery for a winch...there is a little truth there, but thats really if you want or need to do big winches engine off. Actually its better to run it off your primary battery and run the engine. Thats the thinking from many different sources including LR and Warn Mike

Sorry im new to the Land Rover/Range Rover scene but do you specifically need a Warn winch?

I do a lot of offroading in a purpose built offroader and you dont need to shell out a fortune on a Warn winch. Also, cant you get winch mounts for the RRS to minimise butchering the front bumper? A universal winch mount can be a lot smaller and its just a case of drilling your own holes for the winch to sit, a lot come with different points to suit different makes of winch.

Warn winches are good but i see a lot of them breaking down. If your only going to be using the winch now and again, i would look at other makes. Just make sure they are capable of pulling the weight of your truck out. Remember, although your RRS weighs close to 3T, you will need to factor in the resistance of what you are pulling out of.

Synthetic rope is the way forward but if you want to keep cost down, buy a set of very heavy duty gloves for wire rope. Nothing worse than a nice slither of wire disappearing into your hand. 2007 TDV6 HSE

You can use other winches. David bowyer Goodwinch TDs winches are excellent and half the price of warn.
The bolts are slightly different, but nothing a drill can't sort out. Thumbs Up Bodsys Brake Bible

Personally im a fan of warn, over other makes - certainly the cheaper makes...i love my warn winches always have - been winches ive been able to rely on. That said others will work, just not the one to go with the mount.

As for the weight of the sport - its heavy, well within the warn winch capability (9,000 or 12,000lb) - especially with double line pulls. Anyway G4 used the winch on the sport...and on your synthetic point - i use synthetic rope on my warn winch (not the genuine warn version - one from bowyer (who i cant stand)) all the G4 winches had synthetic lines Thumbs Up although there are disadvantages to them, the positives outweigh the negatives.

That said - as i mentioned, the proper mounts are set for warn - but nothing a drill cant solve as long as you check the winch line run through the fairlead whole...

You will need to butcher the front to fit the mount whatever the mount - but there arent many for the sport and given various other points, if it was me i would stick to the genuine mount. Also if you locate it too far forward you will start to screw with the approach angle Mike
