Thule RideOn 9503 - lock advice please

Hi All,

I've just bought a Thule RideOn 9503, after reading the helpful threads on here Thumbs Up

My next challenge is to fit the electrics myself Shocked

For Information (As a number of threads discussed this) Bodsy kindly confirmed that the main things the dealer update does is sort out the rear PDCs and stop the suspension rising in some of the terrain response settings. So you can fit the electrics yourself. Thanks again for that info Ian.

So (finally) my question is - On looking at locks to attach the bikerack to the towbar it seems that the Thule Lock is not well regarded Sad So what solutions do you use to secure the rack onto the towbar (not secure the bikes to the rack as I have that covered Smile ) I've heard that some people just stick it in the boot whilst they are out cycling?

Thanks,

Pat 2011 Autobiography Santorini Black

I bought the lockable barrel cover for it, (but some say they're not very good)...

Mostly I put it in the boot when we're off cycling, and the combination of the thule lock and an additional mototbike chain with padlock making it "one huge locked mass" if I have to leave it with the bikes on.

Either way..if they really want it..they will have it...you just need to satisfy your insurance

Thanks for the response AWD.

Agreed if they want it they will have it. It's scarey that even very good bike locks can only last minutes Shocked And of course people just walk by as they attack it with an angle grinder..... Rolling Eyes

I think I will probably do the same as you.

I must admit, I tend to stick mine in the boot when out for a ride - as you say, I don't think it would take someone 2 mins to rip off the car.
It takes less than a minute (will mine does) to pop it in the boot and that way, I know someone has got to break into the car to get it, which hopefully puts the odds slightly in my favour. Neutral ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

Thanks both for your advice.

I have ordered one now (better safe than sorry) for those rare times we stop with the bikes on and it won't go in the boot.

I know how pCensored ed off I'd feel if I didn't have one on and everything got stolen Whistle

I should say, mine does have a built in lock where it secures to the tow bar, which I have used on the odd occasion, but if I am doing a longer ride, then I will always stick it in the boot.

I think the easier option for a scrote thief is to just remove the detachable tow bar as I believe you can do that without the key if you know how. Sad ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

when using mine, i have two lengths of high tensile cable covered in plastic (it was bought from a bike shop) i just thread it through the towing eye and through all the bikes and padlock it. i regularly leave them like that overnight in hotel carparks (upmarket ones ,mind Laughing ) and never had a problem
cheers

I like that idea Dave for when my bikes are on the car. I have one of those cables to lock the wheels up at home, but never thought of using it when transporting them on the car Thumbs Up
Personally due to their value I don't leave them on the car unattended. Neutral ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

You are quite right,Ady, but only really leave my bikes on when using my mountain bikes, like in Aviemore, there are usually a good few families up there doing the same ( and crime isn't much of a problem in the highlands) I wouldn't dream of leaving my road bike on it like BC says too much to lose!
Cheers
