Private Reg Transfer and Tax Disc

I purchased my car just before Christmas. I also transferred a private reg number to the car. At the time the dealer said that as soon as the paperwork was done, they would put shiney new number plates on the car for me.

Last Thursday the V5 arrived with the private reg number on it - but there is no sign of a matching tax disc. The dealer doesn't have it either.

Can somebody tell me how one is supposed to go about obtaining a new tax disc to match the plate? ---------------------------

Long before you get your log book you (or your dealer?) will get the new tax disc and a certificate to say you can have the plates made with the new reg on.

Sometimes dvla do it there and then for me and other times it has to be sent to Swansea, depends on how lazy they are.

When dvla have done it there and then for me they gave me the new tax disc and cert then if not it's been 7 days after (if they couldn't be bothered and sent it to Swansea to do)

I'd chase it with Swansea.

They don't seem to be that interest in sending the tax disc then, will they pay the fine for not displaying a tax disc? (My enduro mate just got fined for this as the police couldn't get him on anything else)

I'm off to put a private number plate on my bike Thursday so I'll see what happen then..

I have had no issues with changing the number plate myself when visiting the local DVLA office. Walk in with retention certificate and V5 - walk out with Tax disk and certifcate saying I can have the plates made. But sadly they have closed the DVLA office for Birmingham - even though it was a purpose built facillity that can't have been open for more than 8 years.

For the last 2 car swaps the dealer has done everything, but this one doesn't realy seem to be familiar with the process. ---------------------------

Unfortunately they have closed ALL local DVLA offices so now all applications have to go to Swansea to be processed. That's progress for you Rolling Eyes

The DVLA still claim 10 working days for reg turnaround and charge £85 for direct transfer or £105 for retention. In reality it takes three to four weeks and still the same price. If it were any other business than a government agency, there would be outcry from MP's. Like VOSA and DSA, these agencies are now stand alone and have to raise their own income so fines are flying, £35 for not informing a car is sold although they acknowledge they received the V5. You can't argue or apeal just have to pay. Fair justice really? 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱

If it helps...I sold my sport in October, with the same plate stuff to put on retention etc and tax disc claim.

If I ignore the last issue I will say it went off before Christmas (took that long). However, all that paperwork was lost, so ive only (today) been able to send of the new documents.

So in answer to your question if im kind we are at 10 weeks if im brutal we are at 12-14 and the car transfer hasn't even happened yet by the DVLA!! and it will be a further 2 - 3 weeks before they finish.

I bet they wouldn't accept that if you hadn't paid your tax

DVLA is really really bad...but some individuals are ok. We have 3 ongoing and outstanding issues at the minute. Life is too short. But they are faceless bureaucrats with no accountability, unlike many agencies. Mike

As long as the car is taxed on the computers - which it will be - nothing too much to worry about.

Rozzers don't really check tax discs any more.
