Winch Operation Without Replacing Spare

Not sure if this has been covered but guy on Disco facing big bill for a winch after leaving tyre to be repaired on an 11 week old Disco Shocked

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic80879.html

LR refusing warranty claim as they say he should not have used winch without a wheel attached and as we share the same winch this is a bit worrying Sad

Handbook states

Quote:
Note: If, for any reason, the spare wheel is not
to be fitted back in its hoist, the wheel hoist
should be rewound as follows.
Position the lifting lug level on the cable and
wind up the wheel hoist mechanism until it
clutches out.

So what is the problem Confused Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Thanks for this.

This is madness - what are you supposed to do when you leave the spare to be fixed.

I had the same problem when the dealer refused to replace my winch after it didn't work when I wound it up without the spare wheel in place (it didn't clutch out), they said the same that it was my fault and not covered under warranty. I had to get in touch with land rover direct and sent them an email copy of the handbook page, they then relented and renewed the winch, annoying and time consuming but worth the trouble Thumbs Up 2019 BMW X3 2.0i M Sport in metalic black- Brilliant

IIRC my first RRS had a tangled winch problem - replaced under warranty but they cable tied the winch cable to something around the towbar socket rather than winch up without load - seemed odd ....

Poor design and still there 7 years on Confused

Well, was at the dealers this morning.........

Took the manual in and turned to p.227. They took a photocopy and said they would ring LR once they'd inspected the winch.

45 mins later, keys were handed back to me, winch replaced under warranty!!

Service adviser said that they had read the notes in the manual and according to those I hadn't done anything wrong.
Also said they hadn't seen this advice before? The advice that they have been given by LR is completely contrary to what my manual says hence the suggestion over the phone that I had mis used the winch.

They said they would pursue the claim with LR using the evidence from my manual.

I mentioned the suggestion of connecting the wire to the rear tow eye if a spare wheel was not present but this was advised against as it wouldn't be a 'straight' pull if the winch was wound in. They suggested not winding the winch in but to cable tie it around rear cross member until spare wheel is ready to be re fitted.

Happy with the outcome anyway!! Thumbs Up

very easy to replace the winch .. literally 6 screws and thats it .. a word of advice .. amazingly the winch was cheaper to buy from main dealer than on ebay so make sure you double check

My wheel winch seized last night after I'd wound it up without the spare. I took it to the dealer today and expect a warranty officer to call me later with news of whether they'll fix it under warranty.
I showed them this thread so expect a good reply.

He went onto say that they will not honor warranty claims if a power tool has been used to lift or lower the spare wheel. Ra-Ro Sport Super Dooper Charged.

get a wheel protector, suspect there weight would casuecthe winch to operate without a spare. If you took some fog and put it in a jar, would it be missed.
