Fluid Change.

Alright guys, as some of you no i have recently purchased my v8 07 rrs Surprised , a post i put up a few weeks ago had a reply from PADDI and a few others, thanks again, Thumbs Up i was advised to change all the fluids, diffs, transmission including transfer box and engine oil. Could you guys tell me what oil is required for each and how much and if anything else is required, such as sump plugs etc as i am away at work at momemt and would like to order the oils etc for when i get home. Also are the oil changes straight forward ( can be done in a normal garage ) or do i need any specialised tools etc. Also any how to pages i could look at and follow, i seen the one on how to change oil on tdv6 disco, is this same as v8..Thanks again guys....Best forum i have seen. United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Java Black

Reidy,

Nice car - saw the pics in your other thread Thumbs Up

Regarding sourcing the parts and fluids there may be cheaper options but as the correct specs are so vital I have so far always used Land Rover branded (except for the engine oil) and ordered direct from Duckworth parts (01673 849873) site sponsor who gives us a good price and where possible free delivery if you mention the forum.

You'll need:

Two litres differential lubricant and two litres transfer box lubricant (Part #s: LIYK50010 & LTYK500010)

Sealing washer for transfer case drain plug (sorry no part #)

Two engine sump plugs: (L1013938)

Engine oil filter: (LLR002338)

10 litres 5W-30 engine oil that complies at least with WSS-M2C913-C (Mobil or Castrol brands are favourites)[/list]

The Land Rover procedure specifies replacing the differential drain plugs because the new ones come with thread sealant on but in practice you can re-use the originals with a bit of your own thread sealant - use Loctite brand available from all good auto shops (and Halfords) Rolling with laughter
The engine sump plugs should be replaced as they have butyl rubber seals which are not reusable.

For the automatic gearbox oil change I think most of us would recommend having this done by an auto transmission specialist. You can go for the 'double flush' or 'megaflush' method but in either case I'd recommend you have the original plastic sump with integral filter replaced with the metal sump with replaceable filter. This makes subsequent filter and oil changes much easier. The transmission specialist will know how to source the parts from ZF and supply oil to the correct specification. If they don't know all this - go elsewhere. I think ZF themselves have a workshop in Nottingham and can also do this work - details on their website. Do a search for megaflush on the Disco3 site or RRS site for a recommended specialist near you if you decide to go down this route - lots of forum members report great results.

For the procedure to change engine oil this link might help:

For the diff and transfer case procedure look here:
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic79140.html
and here:
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic54815.html

The tools you need are just basic but check you have the sizes mentioned in the linked posts. The 32 mm socket for the oil filter is much bigger than most socket sets for example. A 100 ml syringe with a length of plastic tube (find easiy on Ebay) makes filling the diffs and transfer case a cinch but you'll struggle without this or something similar.

Whilst you are doing this it might be worth changing the fuel filter (LLR009705) see here for a 'how to':
http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/topic27895....ilter+tips

It's possible to do the diffs and transfer case just with the car in off road height but easier if you can raise it higher AND YOU MUST USE AXLE STANDS UNDER THE CHASSIS MEMBERS IN CASE THE CAR DECIDES TO LEVEL ITSELF WHILE YOU ARE UNDER IT.

Hope it all goes well. You may not notice any difference in the way the car goes but you may be saving yourself a whole heap of trouble as fresh oils are much better than tired broken-down old fluids.
