What colour smoke? Indicates the source and hence the likely cause.

I've just had a split turbo pipe which caused thick(ish) black smoke when accelerating heavily. Cost £40 to have the pipe replaced. Looked dramatic but apparently was just that. The increased air getting into the system caused the engine management system to over compensate with fuel.
