I thought insurance in Luxembourg was expensive (Eur 1600 for my Mini JCW cabrio) until I realized that the car is insured, not the driver. So.....anyone can drive. In theory, a 17 year old can get into my 210 hp Mini after just passing their test, and my insurance isn't adjusted (they have a slightly higher excess). UK insurance is a bloody nightmare - competition has not helped the consumer.

Yeah it is crazy out there for youngsters, to the point if we get a call to quote we just say we are not competitive for young drivers and pass on these guys:

No guarantee but worth a call, aggregator sites quote good as well.

It is all about your 'perceived age' and experience in driving!!!

Cheers

The problem in the UK is that 17-21yo drivers are the biggest risk to themselves and everyone else on the road. It's not the value of the car that's determining their insurance costs, it's the fact that their peer age group have a habit of seriously injuring / killing themselves, each other and the public in general.

If they could all just stop driving like Censored for a while they'd probably find their insurance costs coming down. But, as with so many things in life, a small minority drive like idiots and they all, irrespective of their individual Censored quotient, have to pay.

I remember my first "hot hatch" - a Pug 309GTi. Cost me £4000 to buy and £800pa to insure fully comp with business use with 2 year's NCD. I thought that was ridiculously expensive back then but a 21yo would sell his arm to get that sort of insurance deal these days. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

it is crazy im 22 and myself and the x had a mini cooper d recently, i lived in macnhester with her but my family home is based onthe south coast, the change in postcode alone made a £700 difference. There is insurance out there but if you live anywhere near a city your get your pants pulled right the way down
