Clonk when starting engine.

I have a TDV6 RRS....

With the windows down when starting the engine, I turn the key, the starter goes, followed by a metallic clonk (literally CLONK) and the engine kicks in. Is this normal? It doesn't take any longer to start up or anything like that.

Must confess that I've not noticed it on RRS but my BM does it, especially when cold.

As most of the general RRS issues posted on here I eventually discover on ours I'm sure I'll notice it next time I drive it. Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

Not noticed this, and I would do as my wife takes the D3 to work every morning before I go so I am standing by the car to see her off.

They told me that they will do the software upgrade when the car is worked on for the suspension. I'll pop down there in a bit and see what they say and report back. RRS TDV6 Gone but still around

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

Mine had another ECU upgrade (only 3 weeks after the previous upgrade!) at the service last week.
Things that are noticable - engine is noisier, but just as smooth, fuel economy is still good (29.5 so far on the part tank/ 200 miles I have used).
The wipers......................... I don't know what they have done to the automatic on function but it has become so sensitive - 3 spots of rain and they start off and they take ages to "auto" off with a dry screen = lots of grating across a dry screen.
The suspension also seems to pump up a whole lot faster too, but it still groans.
Also fixed was the upper rear hatch rattle, but I don't know if they rehung/ adjusted the hatch to stop the scratching on the main bit. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Had the same metallic sounding clonk for the first 5k miles, but it seems to have pretty much gone away. When I asked about it, they said it wasn't anything to worry about....it was a 'feature' of the engine.

So they're designing cloncking features now....used to be a result of bad manufacturing, how times have changed!

Yep mine does the same. It does sound like the key has been overturned and the starter motor is continuing to turn after the engine has started. I am trying to avoid taking the car in to the dealer as they never come out the same!!!!! and so far (touch wood) with 4000+ miles on the clock, I only have this 'knock' and the side mirrors intermittently refusing to lift back after they have dipped for reverse. Guess I will save them up until i have to go in. TDV6, HSE, Giverney Green/Ivory, Tints, Sidesteps, Sunroof, Towbar and Cycle Carrier, Tasmods Sills, Bluetooth and big smile!

Had the car into the dealer to fix the mirror problem today. It was a replacement 'Gizmo' which forms part of the drivers seat adjustments......Anyway I explained the starter motor clunk to them which resulted in that doubting look they give you, but when I demonstrated the clunk to the technician he believed me. Some head scatching as I left it with them.

When I collected the car later they had fixed the mirrors and the clunk.....the latter being resolved with a software fix. I was advised that they were told by LR that the fix did'nt match my vehicles VIN number, but to go ahead with the patch anyway. But it worked. Oh by the way, they cleaned the car inside and out to boot AND made a good job of it. TDV6, HSE, Giverney Green/Ivory, Tints, Sidesteps, Sunroof, Towbar and Cycle Carrier, Tasmods Sills, Bluetooth and big smile!

My RRS TDV6 is 6 weeks old and it does it too!

I'm confused how a software mod could cure it when it sounds so mechanical; like the starter wiget whatsname disengaging ! It's finally gone! Replaced with BMW 730SE in Sophisto grey Xirallic finish with Oyster (Ivory) and black interior. DAB, Climate glass, Ceramic iDrive and gear selector, power boot and iPhone Bluetooth pack - luvvin' it!

I miss my old RRS "bucket" rattling around but it just had to go!
