White gunk inside oil filler cap

Evening all

Been looking at getting my first RRS, seen a few tatty examples but the last one I saw looked fairly mint. Only issue I noticed was a bit of white gunk inside the oil filler cap.

I've always been told this could represent a failing head gasket, but couldn't find any other evidence of this - no oil leaks around engine, didn't overheat on the test drive, no oil in the coolant bottle. Haven't seen this on any other RRS's I've tried out, so just after the forum's opinion - is this a lemon or am I being a bit paranoid?

Cheers muchly

Jez

A few more details about the car might help, mileage? When was it last serviced? What model/engine is it? How many owners has it had? Has it had a few owner changes recently?

Also doing a lot of short journeys and not getting the engine warmed up causes gunk on the oil cap. Wink

But not as bad as a blown gasket.

Sorry - it's a 2.7l 57 plate HSEwith 40,000 miles on the clock. Just the one owner with full service history (all land rover specialists) , last serviced about three months ago. No other worrying signs than the white stuff. Never seen it on any other car I've owned / looked at so just a bit wary...

Cheers for the replies so far, much appreciated Smile

I wouldn't be too worried then, it probably needs a good long run, i'm guessing its just been pootling around from a-b and not had a decent run for a while.
