I'm looking into buying a RRS in the coming months, the question is whether it's feasible and that's where I need some advice... I'm on a basic wage of £24k p/annum but with overtime income is likely to be in the region of £26k - £31k p/annum... my monthly disposable income is between £900 - £1350 p/month.. is a RRS realistic? I'm looking to pick one up for around the 15/16k mark but my worry is running costs, the price of diesel is not a problem as I work 3 miles away so will mainly be used on days off, but there is obviously a warranty, tax, tyres etc to factor in.. I'm not asking people to disclose their incomes but if anyone is in a similar position to me feel free to advise or shoot me down! I'd like to make this a reality!

They are not quite so daunting as you may think, for that money you will
probably get around a 2007 100,00 miles.

I am just deciding if I want to sell mine and it's
a 56 plate 2007 model with 100,990 miles but with 7500 miles on a brand new engine.

Just a example of the deals out there, but don't let people put you off getting one
as I have had this for 3 years now and althougha few issues hence brand new engine
but at the end of the day wouldn't change a thing and say go for it, you only live once.

If you change your mind you can always sell, hope this helps.

Im not in the same salary bracket as you but i can tell you roughly what my car costs to run.
I work a similar distance from home to you with weekend runs i probably spend a couple of hundred a month on diesel.
My warranty is a pucker LR at around 900 pound a year.
Not bought any tyres yet but i'll need some this year, guessing somewhere between £750 & £1000
Insurance works out at around £25/month.
Road tax is £460 a year.
Servicing £300-£500 a year depending which service is due.
I own mine out right so no monthly finance, not sure if you need to factor this into your disposable.

Thats great, thanks fellas. I'm not so concerned about the likes of the tyres and annual service, these can be budgeted for easily, it was more the monthly/day to day running costs I was thinking about. I'll look into warranties and make sure I allow extra funds for that. I probably wouldn't clear more than £150 worth of fuel a month, I don't tend to go that far. Only thing is insurance quotes are coming in around £1,000 so a bit higher than £25 a month but on the face of things, looks like a RRS could definitely be done.

Had a look into warranties and they seem to cover a fair amount, so I'd be happy to pay for a decent policy to cover my back.

Marinas, have you looked into leasing a RRS ? with that amount of disposable income you might be able to get a lot more for your money and possibley a new or secondary rental, Yes you will need a deposit but you won't have any repair bills other than annual servicing costs and fuel, tax is factured into the rental just a thought

Interesting, I'll look into it! I never thought of that, leasing is something I've overlooked as you don't ultimately own the car but then most people sell or replace their motors when their finance is nearly finished!

I would say that an RRS will take care of at least half of your income, I like yourself work close by, but still manage to rack up 13k miles a year,I go through a set of tyres a year (£750) as it is mostly town and b road driving, I just had my 2nd service, which was £430 plus rear brake pads at nearly £200 (all plus vat!!) my insurance is £700pa if ANYTHING needs replaced , and it will on an older car you are looking at £300-£thousands depending on the failure
My business partner runs a freelander, which costs half as much! Cheap they are not!

If you are happy at budgeting £4-500 a month on running one plus £4-500 buying one over 4 years, then go for it ,they are great cars!

i know!! , first set were continentals which were changed at 13k, and the goodyears i have now are not much better!, town driving knocks out of them! i probably do about 50 duel carriage miles a month!!

I bought my RRS when I retired 2 1/2 years ago its a 2.7 2008 "S" which is just fine for my requirements as its got several upgrads which bring it up to "SE" spec, also I was able to purchase an 18 month old car with 16,000 miles for less than £30k when an HSE would have been considerably more for the same year and mileage.

My pension is mid £30k so not vastly different to your income, I do about 8,000 miles a year in this car (use the wife's for the short journeys). Its not a cheap car to run but I would not want to save money and have any other vehicle, I just love it!

The new road tax cost is £475 pa. You could consider an earlier model and get this for about half this price.

I do all my own servicing (just like to know its been done properly) and change the oil and filter twice a year, huge saving here if you have some mechanical knowhow and yes the service book is fully stamped with invoices to cover each service

Fuel consumption varies from about 15 mpg if I do short journeys 3-4 miles to 35 mpg on long motorway runs.

Towing my twin axle caravan I get about 18-20 mpg.

I have had the landrover extended warranty for the last year but am about to change to Warranty Wise which is considerably cheaper and seems to cover more than the Land Rover warranty. I spoke to my Land Rover dealer friend and he said this was the best aftermarket warranty. I never made a claim on the LR warranty and hope I don't need to on this one!

I am insured with Admiral and have their top policy cover, I renewed my insurance three weeks ago, £263 for the year.

I am sure if you decide to take the plunge you will enjoy every journey, I do.

a small tip for you Marianas: if you get a pre March 06 model, the road tax is £260 a year instead of £475
