Small chunk out of tyre- legal or illegal?

Just clipped a brick earlier, it took a chunk out of tyre and took the aluminum running step off.... I can fix the sidestep easily but is this tyre legal or illegal?

``Tyre Cuts
A cut in excess of 25mm or 10% of the section width of the tyre , whichever is the greater, measured in any direction on the outside of the tyre and deep enough to reach the ply or cord would deem the tyre illegal.

Ply or Cord Exposure
If there is any cut in the tyre no matter how small which exposes cords, then the tyre is illegal.``

If it shows any mark of ply or cord, it`s a goner!

Side wall has to be undamage, since it takes the most stress.

Nasty!

I would have that replaced asap. Probably not very safe and spoils the look of your expensive WC1 alloys!

Which I know is very important to Revere owners Whistle Thumbs Up

No white cords showing so is it really that dangerous? I read tyre walls are 1 inch thick...

Looks to be mostly restricted to the rim guard outside of the bead itself.

And the sidewalls are not an inch thick.

Might be worth asking your MOT tester whether it would fail an MOT? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I took to my mate who owns a tyre shop and he said its nothing to worry about. No white cord showing etc, he said he would glue the rubber back if I wanted but makes no difference.

I agree, my local dealer assured me that a tyre on my RRS with a similar cut was perfectly safe & legal. Let's face it, if it wasn't they'd have soon said so to get a sale Whistle Glad I have an honest dealer Thumbs Up 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

I don't know that I would be happy, with the kids in the car, driving down a motorway in the pouring rain with a chunk out of my tyre like that, legal or not............. Neutral

Personally, I'm in the same camp as Jim, although yes, I'm sure it 'probably' is safe enough, I'm not sure I'd want to take the risk to find out Confused Thumbs Up ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

It probably is ..... just about legal.... and yes it 'probably' might go on for another 10k....
BUT it may not and will definitely will be weaker than perfect....
As has been said... the wall takes all the stress......
i recently had my first blow out on a brand new winter tyre at 70mph...... going straight (not on a bend)
I only just managed to control the fishtailing and think it would have been a different outcome on a corner or at 85mph....

So for me...... its gotta be a change..... no matter what anyone says !!!

Got a couple small chunks out tyres n no problems, had them looked at and it's been through two MOT's which I think wouldn't of passed if the tester felt them unsafe to be on the road Java black 2006
