MT12 - Keyless Entry Fob - Waterproof??

My MY07 RRS used to boast in the manual that the Key Fob was waterproof to 30ft (or something similar).

Following a trip out on my boat yesterday I have a sudden interest in whether the MY12 Fob is also waterproof, or can I expect it to fail shortly Shocked Shocked 2016 RRS 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography Dynamic in Montalcino Red and Stealth Kit

Didn't see a mention of the key fob being waterproof when I spent many hours reading my owners handbook whilst sat on the loo.

Certainly in the past (my own experiences) Land Rover have struggled to make their sunroof's, head lights and doors seals waterproof, so I don't hold out much hope for your key fob........... Whistle

my guess just from looking at the design is that the new keys aren't (a 'speaker' type bit and a fully pop-out spare physical key) ... I seem to remember the claim too Whistle ============

old (rubberised, one piece):

new (not so rubberised, vent/"speaker" is on the right hand side corner)

Thumbs Up

edit: another side on pic that suggests the new key isn't as one-piece and is less rubbery than the old one

My RRS MY12 key fob doesn't look like the "new" one shown here. It's got a black gloss back to it and a chrome silver strip down the right hand side and doesn't look water proof to me.

Regards
Paul.

My MY12 doesn't look like that either. Its also a high gloss black case with a bright metal edge on one side.

Looking at the manual the bright metal edge removes to reveal the emergency key, but its possible that the main body is fairly sealed.

Put it this way, all three electronic car keys on my key ring (Suzuki, Peugeot, Range Rover) are all still working two days later, but my pocket camera is well and truly dead. 2016 RRS 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography Dynamic in Montalcino Red and Stealth Kit

Thanks James, your comment is very worrying!

Therefore I bit the bullet and opened it up...

And thankfully it is sealed! If you look there is a bead of silicon sealant in the channel where the case fits. Phew! not a sign of salt water anywhere.

Thats certainly a relief!

Yes, whilst I would not want to test it to the limit it certainly survived me falling off the boat into the March temperature sea on Saturday. Probably 2 minutes before I got back on board and a further 5 minutes in soaked clothing before I realised they were in my pocket. 2016 RRS 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography Dynamic in Montalcino Red and Stealth Kit

James,

I would relay these concerns to LR......don't you see it is obvious now that this less effective water proof key is the reason Sexy Pauly opted for a non-RRS this time around, think how much time he spends on yachts!!!

Also I would suggest a key mini parachute for private jet jaunts.
