No such thing as an overtaking lane, just lanes 1, 2 and 3 on the motorway or lanes 1 and 2 on a dual carriage way.

Nothing worse than having a Censored up your backside flashing his lights as if he is something special.

Next question Whistle

Jim not sure if thats a wind up, if it is you got me hook, line and sinker Smile if not please refer to the highway code: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTrans.../DG_070308 where lanes 2 and 3 are clearly stated for overtaking, rules 137 & 138 Wink

Lets put this to bed.

Lane 2 and 3 are for overtaking - hence why you should keep left. But that doesnt make lane three the fast lane!

There are three lanes (or 4) on a motorway, but where ever you should keep LEFT unless overtaking...overtaking doesnt mean fast - it just means you relatively going faster than the traffic to the left. The traffic could be in lane one broken down, you are overtaking it - but you might be doing 20mph.

Also lane 3 still has the maximum speed limit in the uk of 70 - therefore you can be in it at 70 overtaking a car at 69 in lane 2 overtaking a lorry at 57 in lane one.

D Censored ks who come up in the outside lane flashing first off are d Censored ks and second would just get me to slow down, they could - after all - be flashing to warn me of something and therefore it would be unsafe to continue at my present speed until i am fully aware of the danger they are trying to alert me to.

Remember why horns and lights are on cars.

And why BMW and Hedgehogs are similar but different Mike

Surely if you are in the left lane and the traffic (you) is actually traveling faster than the traffic ( Censored end) in the middle lane Whistle i thought you are are quite within your rights to pass on the inside .. undertaking illegal yes, traffic traveling faster on inner lane no.. hmm could be a dodgy interpretation on my part Laughing Another Pommie Bar Steward down under

Somebody's going to get the shock of their lives one day thinking all BMW drivers flashing their headlights to clear the fast lane are dicks given the number of blue/grey 5 Series unmarked traffic cars I spot on the M1 between Nottingham and Leeds Rolling with laughter
As far as I am concerned there is a huge difference between maintaining my speed in the middle or inside lane which is faster than the 3rd lane and weaving in and out undertaking.
Quite often on the M1 between Nottingham and Sheffield the quickest lane is the inside lane as the lorries drive smoothly without braking and the 3rd/4th lane is much slower because of all the reps and white van men nose to tail on the brakes every 30 seconds. MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.
