Service - sooner or later

Bought my April 07 with 42k miles in January and mileage now at 48k. Early heavy use brought a service ahead of schedule based on mileage not time.

Heres the rub! The dealer I bought it from Stratstone Jaguar says I have to have the service in November.

Last service was Nov 09 at 41k miles. A year down the line is it time to service?

I ask this as the service book is clear, 60k miles or 4 years, either of which I am nowhere near until April 2011.

I have LR extended warranty which I dont want to lose but the 40k miles or 4 years.

Any views on this, possibly from James as a dealer as well as our tech experts?

Many thanks Now - MY11 RRS Autobiography TDV6, Orkney gray, tints, steps, daylight running lamps and allllll the toys!!!

Servicing is when the indicator shows at about 11 months after the last service unless the car has had a hard life when it will show earlier. Owners manual says 15,000 mile OR 12 months whichever comes first. If you feel it needs a service before them there is no reason not to have it done early. I have mine serviced early last year as I was going to be overseas when it was due - dealer wasn't happy and said to do it when I came home, which would have been more than 2 months after the due date which would have voided the 3 years warranty.
There must be something big due at 60k or 4 years like gearbox oil change or cambelt/chain. I no longer have my RRS so cannot see what the service manual shows - strangely the FFRR Tdv8 is different to RRS - FFRR has different service indicator!. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Thanks Tim but this is where the confusion starts. There is no mention of 15k or 12 months from last service. It purely states:

"All services should be carried out at the distance or time based intervalsshown below (which ever comes first)

15k or 12 months
30k or 24 months
45k or 36 months
60k or 48 months "

If there is a service indicator on the MY07 it hasnt shown on my read out, as yet.

I just would like to avoid £500 before Xmas nad get the service in April - if possible. Now - MY11 RRS Autobiography TDV6, Orkney gray, tints, steps, daylight running lamps and allllll the toys!!!

Service schedules can go out of sync for a few reasons but the most common is when a car changes owner and the dealer services it early as part of the Approved Scheme, making it more attractive to a prospective buyer. Also an owner may do a low mileage and service annually and then circumstances change, their mileage increases and they then service by mileage. This can be the case when a car changes owner from a high mileage user to a low mileage user.

The very simple answer is to get it serviced 12 months from the previous service or when you reach 15000 miles from the last.

Reading your post you need to get it serviced at 56000 miles or next month, whichever happens first. Your service book will confirm, but I'm guessing it's due a 60k??!!

Thanks James

As a QA guy with 25 plus years involved in maintenance schedules I wish that the service book instructions were clearer - obviously written without thought to the actual statement.

There should be a clear statement covering this, similar to yours James, to avoid people taking the LR booklet so literally.

Just had a call from LR customer service regarding Servicing.

They stated that the presumption to service every 12 mnths or 15k is not correct. If this was the requirement then only a one liner in the Service Portfolio would be required.

Instead there is a table and that is the requirement.

My RRS had high mileage in early life and therefore fell into the mileage requirement. Now the mileage is low and it falls into the time requirement. So althought the 45k/3yr service was done early(timewise) in November 2009 it isnt due the 60k/4yr service until April 2011 (or if I do 10k before then).

So in my case it is 17 months between service but still within requirement of the Service Portfolio and will keep my Extended Warranty intact.

Looks like goose and not chicken this Xmas afterall Now - MY11 RRS Autobiography TDV6, Orkney gray, tints, steps, daylight running lamps and allllll the toys!!!

As James says that isn't correct. If it was serviced November 09 and you don't service it til April 11 as you say that's 17 months. To keep your warranty intact it needs to be serviced 12 months or 15,000 miles after the last service. You do however get a leeway of a month or 1,000 miles. This means that you can go to December 10 or 16,000 miles after the last service.

Sorry to be so blunt but no where in the service portfolio does it state that a service is 15k or 12 months after any service that may have been due previously due to high mileage.. All mileage and dates are from new not from last service.

Following the table and my record I have met the requirements of that table.

1st service is 15k or 12 months - mine serviced at 14.8k (earlier than time).
Next service is stated at 30k or 24 months - mine serviced at 28.5k (earlier than time)
Next service is stated as 45k or 36 months - mine serviced by LR dealer (custodian at time) at date not mileage (40k)
Next service is stated as 60k or 48 months - mine is at 49k and 43 months.

This is what was confirmed with LR and I am following that table.

Until LR change that advice they are the prime source.

I also passed this over with a contract lawyer specialising in equipment issues who agreed with LR Now - MY11 RRS Autobiography TDV6, Orkney gray, tints, steps, daylight running lamps and allllll the toys!!!

Agree with what your saying but I'm pretty certain thats not the case. If this was the case why does the service indicator come on 12 months from the last service?

MAIN SERVICE = The main service is applicable to all vehicles. It is carried out at 12 month or 15,000 mile intervals, whichever occurs first.

Main Service "A" is applicable at 12 months/15,000 miles, 36 months/45,000 miles, 60 months/75,000 miles 84 months/105,000 miles and so on.

Main Service "B" is applicable at 24 months/30,000 miles, 48 months/60,000 miles, 72 months/90,000 miles, 96 months/120,000 miles and so on. Some items do not need to be carried out at every main service and these items are identified by an indicator in the tick box e.g. 60k (This indicates that this item is only applicable every 60,000 miles)

NOTE: The service required should be at the time or distance stated, which ever occurs first.

I think the operative words from above will be "12 month or 15,000 mile interval".
It does not matter when the last service was performed BUT the next service will/should be done 12 months or 15,000 miles (whichever comes first) from that last service date. Malaysia Boleh!

Hi Bobby
I do see what you say but the direction in the service book is not as you have in your post.
For my RRS MY07 it is tabled - a copy is in my gallery - and is worded differently and really that is the crux. The service book has a document code is therefore a controlled document issue.

It states when service is due not what the intervals are according to any service. There is no covering statement to match your document Bobby.

To be honest the service isnt going to be missed and if kept to the table will align it to MOT etc.

Maybe you should get your dealer to verify which of the sevice schedues you should follow and what they actually mean.

Steuart

I would never leave it 17 months between services, that's way too long in my view. My RRS is going in for a 2 year service next week. The car is a Jan 09 and has only done 22000 kilometers but since my miles are not that high, it gets done according to time which here in Oz is 6 months or 12000km.

My background is not QA but is in the aviation industry where maintenance is vital to safety. I make sure all the family's 3 vehicles are serviced every 6 months. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6
