My car is currently up for sale privately, what's the best/safest way to take payment? (if I ever get a buyer)
Car is up for around £12k

Not sold a car privately for a good while, but I used to take a deposit in cash, then either a cheque/bankers draft or bank transfer and would only let the car go once the funds were cleared in my account. ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

^^^ +1 Also bare in mind who you are inviting to your home to look at your motor, better still if you can take it to them if not too far away or sell it from your work if possible, but before you offer a viewing get a landline number and if possible an address of the person coming to view the car, and check that the details are correct before you invite them to your home, you will be surprised what some people will do to get their hands on some desirable motors, never give out the cars reg number or chassis number over the phone either, they may ask for it to do a hpi check but they can do that when they have viewed the motor.

Just sold my HST privately, the guy paid in CASH Shocked

We were in Barclays for half an hour while they counted it Rolling with laughter

In this day and age a bank transfer is best (BACS) and is hassle free. The only reason I went down the cash route is the because the buyer had a 700 mile journey from the tip of Scotland to pick it up Shocked

I sell cars regularly (company cars) and I only ever accept cash.

I get the buyer here, don't even bother counting the cash, straight to the bank, let them count it and verify its real in front of us both, straight in the account.

Simples.

Some people always say "Can I ask why you want cash?" .....why wouldn't you?

I just say cash or nothing.

Rolling with laughter That's even funnier, would have been superb if he'd left it on there.........conversation with the lost and found would have been a corker......"anything in the bag Sir........errrr, yes, just the £36k in £50 notes" Laughing

Most I ever took cash was £10k, and that was a pain to count, bloke got it in £10s and £20s Rolling Eyes . Your MO seems a good one Jonny, both sides should be happy then Thumbs Up ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i
