Plastic water pump impellers...really?

During this weekends camping trip up into the mountains my mates LR3 V8 engine started to overheat. After being towed back to Dubai he was told that the water pump plastic impeller had busted.
Is the water pump impeller on the Sport Super Charged also plastic?...this scares me a bit since I like to carry such spares on extended trips.
