Malaysia help please

Heading of to Malaysia in the coming month. Starting of in Malaka then flying into Panang then onto Langkawi returning to Kuala Lumpar for the last few nights.

Has anybody visited these places that could suggest places to eat or anything that should not be missed in these areas Thumbs Up
Was also thinking of hiring a car in Langkawi but doing a search only brings up some very iffy cars but if that's all they've got then that will have to do.

Any suggestions folks as I know your all well travelled guys and hopefully Bobby seen as he's a local out there Bow down thanks in advance Thumbs Up Now gone Orkney grey SDV6 HSE with body style kit contrast stitch ebony leather, privacy, black piano, 22" Lowenharts for summer, 20" with Leon LTZ for winter.

If you are into the outdoors a trip to east malaysia is well worth it. Fly to kota kinabalu, sabah. Some good scuba diving spots, climb the highest mountain in south east asia, white water rafting, nice beaches too and
Some good local bars

Return flights to kota kinabalu frm kuala lumpir can be had for around £80 per person return on air asia

Will have to keep a close eye on this thread! Very Happy

Heading out to Kuala Lumpur in September for 5 days on route to the Singapore GP. Booked it with not really any idea of what there is to do there but made sense to do a stop over as it worked out cheaper than flying direct, free 5 day holiday (sort of!)

I had a chat with a work colleague who's from Malaysia, he did say that the best way to see the sights/explore is to hire a taxi guide. For about £80 per day they take up to 8 people on different excursions. Which you can taylor to be as touristy or non-touristy as you like. What i did like about that is you pay for the taxi guide/minibus not just a seat, as 4 of us are going we will just have it to ourselves. Did quite a bit of research into hotels and booked the Shangri-La, trailfinders are doing a deal with free room upgrade and free breakfast.

Think we're going to do something along the lines of the below;

Batu Caves and Temple
Day sightseeing in the city including KL tower and central markets (they have a restaurant at the top of the tower)
Tour of Malacca
Rainforest walking tour

When we come back I'll post something up to hopefully give you a heads up on anything worth seeing. Bit templed out after being to Cambodia Vietnam and Sri Lanka the past few years. We tend not to go with the tourist flow if we can help it and get a local guide to take us to some great foody places if we can. bit of a wind down and chill hol, go with the flow and see what happens Thumbs Up Now gone Orkney grey SDV6 HSE with body style kit contrast stitch ebony leather, privacy, black piano, 22" Lowenharts for summer, 20" with Leon LTZ for winter.

Sorry, i missed this thread! Embarassed

Its times like this when you realise you know so little of your own backyard!! Laughing

I think the guys have given you quite good advice already.

Anyway, my two cents worth! How do you start off in Melaka? Coming in from Singapore? Like they said, some historical places to visit in Melaka. Also here you can see very old Chinese/Malay architecture. Penang is better. Good hotels and beaches, especially in Batu Feringgi. Lots of local food to try and also the night markets. Langkawi is overrated. Its just got some places to visit that are related to legends but otherwise its just a tourisy destination. Things are more expensive here.

Generally, KL is famous for its Cantonese and Hakka food. Penang is predominantly Hokkien but you do get Hokkien/Malay food that is unique.

Good shopping in KL, and you might get genuine branded stuff that are cheaper than in Europe (in the bigger malls).

Local inbound tours mentioned above are good and you just make sure the hotel is aware of your arrangements.

Please let me know if you have any specific questions and I'll try to help. Malaysia Boleh!

Thanks for the advice booked to go on a culinary tour on Penang visiting the wet markets and hawker stalls for some local delicacy s.

Are electrical items photographic equipment etc cheaper? Looking at possibly getting a new lens for our canon. Stopping at the traders hotel opposite the petrones towers believe this is as central as we can get for the malls etc is there specific shop names that deal in photography equipment that I need to look out for?

Thanks in advance Thumbs Up Now gone Orkney grey SDV6 HSE with body style kit contrast stitch ebony leather, privacy, black piano, 22" Lowenharts for summer, 20" with Leon LTZ for winter.

Go to LOW YAT PLAZA.
Big shopping mall only with electronics. Cool
All the brands and very very good prices! Mr. Green
Bought a Samsung TAB 10.1 WIFI 3G for 380 euro“s incl cover (and that was in november 2011).
Also a lot of choise in cameras and lenses.
Prices are negotiable!

http://www.kuala-lumpur.ws/information-technology.htm

This mall is situated at the Bukit Bintang shopping area, a area full with very good shopping malls.

Keep your gf away from the shoe shops, because mine went crazy after seeing the prices!!!

Shangri-la hotel is excelent choise.
We got an upgrade with views at the Petronas Towers (10 minutes walk)
Don“t waste to much time in the mall below these towers, because the Bukit Bintang shopping area is much better.
Only 5 minutes walking distance from the hotel is also the KL tower, which you can visit to the top.
We requested a late check out, and could use the room untill 1700. Now that is service!
Very good breakfast. Excelent gym.
Hotels offers a comfy limo service to the airport. Be aware that traffic can be heavy onroute to the airport.
Calculate 1 1/2 hrs for this trip.

http://www.shangri-la.com/en/property/kualalumpur/shangrila

Indeed Langkawi is overrated. Pricey.
Therefore we spent only 2 nights there and left for Koh Lipe, Thailand, per speedboat.
From there to Koh Ngai, Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi and flew back from Puhket to KL.

Enjoy ! Thumbs Up SW

Thanks for that Skywaker Thumbs Up

Oh dear fear we will come back with a suitcase full of shoes only Shocked

We're stopping at tang Jung rhu sanctuary for six nights on Langkawi in the south of the island just for a chill out time don't think it's as touristy down there but not sure?

All the hotels are now booked so we just have to wait and see what there like. I believe traders hotel in KL is facing the towers as well.

Thanks again Thumbs Up Now gone Orkney grey SDV6 HSE with body style kit contrast stitch ebony leather, privacy, black piano, 22" Lowenharts for summer, 20" with Leon LTZ for winter.
