Brake Warning and Why its not on?

Hi All

God its good to be back.

So my issue for today is my brakes. Ive noticed when breaking (occasionaly i do lift off my iron clad shoe off the accelerator), i get a slight juddering and a very quiet squeak. But this doesnt happen all the time.

I thought that it could be warped discs but Ive had a look and im unsure what im actually looking at Ha ! Blonde I know. Embarassed But I cant see any obvious signs of warping or anything else.

I would have thought the warning light would have come on if i needed new break pads, but are they diaganol warning sensors or on each corner. Would be handy to know.

So my next question is ... Do you have to take it to a main dealer to get new pads . discs fitted? My new dealer is a fair trek away from me so it would be a mammoth expidition. But not out of the question.

I'd say you'll struggle to see any warping with them in situ, especially if there is only a 'slight' juddering.

I'm sure you could get an independent L/R specialist to take a look if you have one close by and as long as they use OEM L/R parts, there should be no hassle with your warranty. Smile ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

Any of the high street garages should be able to sort this for you - my local Kwikfit are actually really goods guys. Not sure if they woould use OEM parts also? At least it would be a free inspection by them to diagnose any issues.

The wear indicators are only on one pad on each axle and so if pads wear unevenly may not indicate a pad issue. However, they indicate when there is 25% of the pads left, so not an immediate requirement to change depending on your useage. They are fitted to the near side front and offside rear inner pads.

Foxy you're back!! Shocked Shocked

It could be slightly binding on brake calipers. Over my 90k miles all calipers have been replaced due to this and on D3s it doesn't just affect us weirdos that play in the sand or mud. Best way to check is after the judder, or a drive of a few mies, CAREFULLY check the wheel temp by gently tapping the face of the wheel (NOT inside or disc) with he back of your hand. A wheel should be tepid temp wise, any hotter (one more than the rest) & you may well have a binding caliper, or EPB pads on the back. If you want a dealer to do this they have to check as soon as you arrive otherwise things have cooled down.

As I said, check carefully, I've had a caliper glowing as it was binding, only got shuddering after a few miles.

Just try giving the calipers a blast with a hot water jet wash before you spend any money at a garage it might just be a bit of gunge on a caliper causing it to stick a bit. MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.
