Invalidated warranty?

There's been a lot of talk about remapping.

Can anyone categorically tell me (us) whether this invalidates the warranty on the rangey? The views of the boys at LPR would be appreciated here too, altho I appreciate they may want to somewhat guarded on this subject.

I emailed site sponsor amd and they tell me (and I've no reason to doubt them) that LR won't even know it's there if I don't tell em. I'm strongly considering it cos any more grunt would have to be good (improved mpg would be another nice little bonus), but I still have over 2 years to run on my LR warranty.

Thoughts please? Have i got the busted controller?!?!!?

the answer is yes, if they find out it will invalidate your warranty even if the fault has nothing to do with your engine or transmission

In a word yes - but appropriately applied - an engine remap has no implications if your door handle falls off.

If you have engine, g/box or driveline issues then i think you have given LR the get out of jail free card with a remap. You may be able to argue differently but rather than have a slam dunk claim you could face some resistance.

The issue of whether they know it's there or not is moot. If they ask you have you had it modded are you going to lie? What will you tell the insurance company?

Well consider this related incident form a "source":

A LR Trainer on site asked to look at a warranty claim for electrics says the claim is invalid without even entering the car or seeing the lights switched on.

Why? Because it had 22" wheels; considered an unapproved modification.

You may well contest this in court, as the fault being un-associated with the mod, but at what expense? Now - MY11 RRS Autobiography TDV6, Orkney gray, tints, steps, daylight running lamps and allllll the toys!!!

It depends how brazen JLR want to be. One correctly worded solicitors letter demostrating that you may be prepared to take this to court should be enough to convince them that denying a warranty claim for a lighting failure based on the size of the wheels on the car is a very silly thing to do.

If the items are linked or even remotely linked then they may try to call your bluff. Large wheels and a suspension fault claim may be another matter for example.

An engine remap I would have thought would immediatley invalidate warranty on engine, gearbox, transmission and even suspension/brakes/wheels etc as they are all either directly or indirectly linked to the engine output. They may also link a remap to electrical failures due to the alternator output possibly being affected (highly unlikely, but still probable).

imho you would be left with the paint/bodywork/interior warranty still available but you may have to be prepared to argue it. In my prior dealings with JLR I have come to the conclusion that after they have sold the product, they couldnt be less interested in the service or quality of the experience you have from the dealer or the product if they tried. We had two XF cars that were complete pigs. Electrical faults, paint defecfts, engine faults all started less than 24 hours after pickup from brand new at the dealer. My correspondence from JLR stating as FACT that they say the issue was with my dealer and not with them or their product shows to me how likely they are to discuss things amicably if a warranty claim is rejected for whatever frivolous reason. RRS 3.0D HSE 11MY - Fuji White, a few extras.

So, with the balance of over 2 years left on warranty I shouldn't go forward I don't think.

Are we saying that most any modification would invalidate warranty?

The milltek exhaust system also looked interesting but again would this have the same effect on engine warranty cover?

Thoughts appreciated thus far and James special thanks for confirming the official line Thumbs Up Have i got the busted controller?!?!!?

Any modification will probably invalidate any warranty (it's just an insurance policy after all)..Give an insurance company a "way out" they will always take it

You'd have to check ref the exhaust though, some are happy with "cat back" systems, some are not.

As for your local dealer checking, mine has never/would never check for an ecu map change (unofficial obviously) but it's your motor not mine Wink RRS gone

a freel2 member, was slagging off his dealer over an issue he had had with them, and whilst doing this he was using a profile that really did not hide his identity, and the photos in his gallery showed the car and its reg

The story goes that the dealer, printed off his posts and informed LR that he had stated on a forum he was running a bluefin superchip and blah blah BHP.

He had a issue with his gearbox and LR stated what they had been told, I removed all reference to it been chipped from his posts and ones quoted and LR fixed the item under warranty. Apparently LR said they wouldn't believe a quote on a "silly car forum" and its what can be proved.

So my view is, if your in warranty and want a chip, then dont brag about it or say anything that could effect the warranty, just let your insurance company know

It's very hard if not impossible for a dealer to know the car has been remapped. Also a dealer doesn't want to upset customers, and does get paid for warranty work so won't go out of their way to go risking either of those (in my experience). WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award

That's how I got caught before my RRS. Hence I'm fully loaded now but all standard LR kit. Thumbs Up

On a normal service the dealer isn't likely to drive the car off the premises. It would have to be booked in for more than that. WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award

When I bought my first RRS (MY07) brand new from an LR dealer they proudly informed me that they had chipped it for me! I had not asked for it but was glad to accept it on the old 2.7 litre engine. It would have been an interesting debate with LR if they had ever tried to deny warranty on the car based on it being chipped.
That said, I really don't see the point of chipping the 3 litre engine as it has loads more poke than the earlier models anyway. 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black
