Tailgate lower latch not releasing

Can anyone help please, i have an 08 TDV8 range rover sport that has a problem with the lower tailgate latch. When pressing the full tailgate release button the latch makes a whirring noise but does not release. I am resigned to the fact that the latch is in need of replacement but have no idea how to get into the taildoor to release it to replace the latch.
Is there anyone else out there who has experienced this or can shed any light on the situation ?
Any help greatly appreciated.

2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Santorini Black

there is some reset procedure that Bobby can probably tell you, involves putting something somewhere (in the locking mechanism). Sorry - don't remember details - happened to me years ago where the boot wouldn't close. ============
