Replacing Cd Player

Hi All,

The buttons on my cd player have all gone floppy which can only denote that the flimsy bits of plastic behind them have snapped.
I have purchased a replacement unit and have now tried to replace the front fascia panel from the purchased unit to the body of my unit, but it just will not work.

Behind the fascia plate there are two ribbons which connect up the cd unit to the front panel, it appears that this is where theproblem is, I have tried to re seat these back into their slots but with the space being so crtically tight its near impossible. On plugging back into the car its just interference all the way with no display at all.

One point: when replacing head units do they absolutely have to be of the same part number?? I always thought that the 6 cd player was generic across the sport/vogue and disco range but maybe i am wrong and this is why i am meeting such problems in replacing.....

Any advice on this would be very welcomed.
