If I buy something from Ireland, for installation and sale in the UK, and I pay 21% VAT in Ireland, can I reclaim the full 21% VAT or just 20%?

why not just give them your vat number when buying so they can zero rate it ?

I was chatting with my accountant about this today in conversation and he emailed me this:

The only available method of refund is to submit a claim to the Irish Revenue Commissioners under the procedures which allow recovery of VAT incurred in another EC country. This is known as the Eighth Directive procedure and is fully explained in VAT Notice 723 (obtainable from www.hmrc.gov.uk) Essentially, you can claim if you are not registered, liable or eligible to be registered in ireland; have no place of business or other residence there; and do not make any supplies there.You must make your claim no later than 6 months from the end of the calendar year in which you incurred the VAT, that is before 1 July in the following year.
