Tyre sizes

I've checked both 2010 and 2011 driver's handbooks for the Range Rover Sports. They both give different tyre sizes for standard and winter tyres.

Standard tyre for 19 inch wheel is 255/50 R19 Y.

Winter tyre for 19 inch wheel is 255/55 R19 111H.

Is it right that standard are 50 aspect ratio and winter tyres are 55 aspect ratio?

Confused of Shetland (Almost an owner). Confused

255 55 19 is normally the Land Rover Discovery size. I'd not heard of that being the winter size for the RRS. As the speedo will read differently I'd be surprised. WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award

Yes I'm surprised as well, but that is what the drivers handbooks say according to the Landrover web site. Off to check the Discovery's handbook to see if there is any difference, will report back.

I've checked the Discovery 4 drivers hand books for 2010 and 2011 and the results are:-

2010 Discovery 4 standard 19 inch wheel = 255/50 and winter = 255/55

2011 Discovery 4 standard 19 inch wheel = 255/50 and winter = 255/65

Yes the winter tyre for the 19 inch wheel for 2011 is according to the handbook is 65 aspect ratio according to the web site download.

Are these errors only on the download versions or are they on the printed versions that come with the vehicles as well? Could anyone with access to the handbooks check what is written, check Tyres and Technical Specifications please.

I've checked my handbook and it does say 255/55 R19 for winter tyres. That's interesting as my MTR's are that size as it was the only size available. It does give a smoother ride with the extra rubber but I found the speedo reads about 3mph less at 60mph. It actually makes it more accurate as it's then spot on the road angel GPS speed. WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award

Richard, I believe 255/55 R19 is the correct size for summer and winter tyres. What size summer tyres do you have? Also what does your handbook recommend for summer and winter use.

Whichever size wheel is used the tyres circumference should be the same, the bigger or smaller wheel differences being adjusted by the tyres different aspect ratios.

It's 255/50 19 for the Range Rover Sport for summer tyres. Only the discovery comes with 255/55 19. The handbook doesn't recommend a particular summer tyre, only winter Goodyear Ultra Grip.

There is quite a difference in size between the two. WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award

Richard, so you have 255/50 summer tyres fitted and the handbook recommends 255/55 for winter tyres. dont you think there is something odd about this. The handbook does not recommend any particular summer tyre, but in the Technical Specifications the 255/50 tyres are mentioned.

Can you confirm the summer tyres fitted to your RRS is in fact 255/50 size. The reason I'm asking is that in the 2011 Discovery 4 drivers manual these sizes are recommended.

19 inch wheels - summer 255/50
- winter 255/65

This is obviously an error, and I think the RRS tyre figures are also wrong. Either that or I'm completly wrong in thinking both tyres are different sizes which makes no sense to me at all.

Yes, here is the tyre pressure sticker from the inside of the door:

Thanks Richard, that's very helpful.

I'm expecting to take delivery of a 2011 TDV6 HSE later this month and they come with 20 inch wheels as standard, so I've bought a set of 19 inch wheels for winter use. So in anticipation I have ordered a set of Vredestein Wintrac 4 Xtreme tyres size 255/55 R19 as that is the recommended size in the handbook.

When I read the 19 inch wheels have 255/50 R19 tyres I thought I had made a big mistake and could end up with 4 new tyres that were the wrong size. Reading that you have used this size winter tyre without any problems has put my mind at rest, and helped my future bank balance. Thumbs Up

I still don't understand why standard and winter tyres should have different aspect ratios though. Big Cry

Thanks for the link ARHRRS, this proves the information in the handbook is wrong (and has been since 2007) according to etyres.co.uk.

They recommend a maximum difference of +/- 2.5% and this is 3.39% if following the 2007 - 2011 Range Rover Sport handbooks advice for 19 inch wheels.

The advice given in the 2011 Discovery 4 handbook is even worse, giving a difference of 10.3% between standard and winter 19 inch wheels.

My dealer says they would never fit a different size tyre than that already fitted from new, and do not recommend using the 255/55 R19 winter tyres.

Anyone know of a contact number at Land Rovers technical department where I could get an official confirmation on what tyres can be fitted?
