Coolant Loss

Hi Chaps,

Just wondering if anyone has experienced the same issues as I am.

Basically I am topping up coolant constantly. I have only had the car 6 months and I must have used about 5 litres. The temperature gauge never reads above the middle of the dial but the 'Low Coolant' message comes on constantly especially if I drive over 75mph (not kicking the Censored of it though)

There is no visible leak so the system was pressure tested - twice - but no issues were found.

My mate had very similar issues in his RRS but it took a long time to get to the bottom of his problems. His car ended up bellowing plumes of white smoke and LR assist taking it away again before LR finally diagnosed the problem.

He has kindly phoned LR this afternoon and the technician who carried out the work called back to let us know the final outcome of the diagnosis and fix. He said that it was the EGR cooler which uses the engine coolant system through some form of 'honeycomb filter type thing' to cool the exhaust gases. The honeycomb filter can break down (and has happened a few times to his knowledge). Result = coolant in the exhaust system Big Cry and plumes of white smoke etc. Technician said that it would be recommended to get into LR before it dies a slow death.

Just wanted to share incase anyone else was getting fed up with coolant issues but with no apparent cause. Don't know how common it is but I'll keep up to date.

Trip to LR in the morning then.

Sorry to hear you're having problems.

If it helps the Coolant leak I had was down to a cracked bottle. It passed the first pressure test my dealer did - how I dont know? Not being technical I dont know if these tests are reliable (as I think they are) and it was possibly down to mechanic incompetence. The second test enabled them to establish the cause and deal with it.
Though I could see the coolant leaking out on my garage floor - can you see any sign of the coolant leak when the car has been standing for a while? 2011 Autobiography Santorini Black

Thanks Pat but there's no visible signs of a coolant leak which gets me thinking that it must be getting into some other part of the system or possibly the exhaust system?? It's got to be going somewhere right?

Just to clear an obvious one. When you say your topping it up, are you topping it up to the max fill mark or are you brimming the header tank?? Mine comes up with the low coolant message on a regular basis but it just the crappy level sensor gone wrong.

I'm only filling to the middle of the cold fill range. Just had to buy another bottle of coolant from halfords at the weekend

If its been pressure tested there's no guarantee that there isn't a leak within the engine somewhere. I had a supercharged BMW that threw a belt one day and didn't actually over heat but it was never right after that. You could do 300 to 3000 miles without a problem yet another day you went a mile up the road and it overheated. We tried everything!! Pressure tests included but never ever found the problem, but somehow from somewhere when it decided to lose water it did. Now dont panic because i'm sure there's nothing internal wrong with your engine, it may just be something silly. when the engines hot have you had a real good look under the bonnet and under the car?? There may be a tiny hole in one of the hoses or a tiny leek somewhere. You mentioned the egr system on your mates. Wonder if it makes a difference if you do the egr blank??
