Land Rover (Lookers) Chelmsford

Anybody dealt with these people?

After seeing a new shape RRS on Auto Trader the right spec, toys and with in my price range I decided a visit to the above mentioned dealer was in order! So off I went very excited and with strong intentions of buying it. One arriving I see the car on the forecourt, I spent a while checking it over I wasn’t approached by anybody from sales which I liked to be honest it gave me a chance to have a unhurried look around and kick a few tyres along the way!

After a good look round it and not being able to contain myself any longer I made for the sales office at speed! Finding the first guy I lay eyes on sitting behind a desk I was quick to ask for the keys and for him to price my car on a part ex. Immediately I got the impression this sales guy was about to go to lunch and he wasn’t over the moon about putting it of to deal with me, a warm and welcoming smile, handshake or introduction was not on offer here. So my first impressions were not great to be honest but I was still quite excited about the car so I pressed on hoping this guy would at least crack a smile or tell me his name as we walked across the car park. As soon as we got to the car (not even opened the door I mean just stood next to it) the first thing he said to me was ‘Are you going to buy this car today?!’ I was gobsmacked! I think this guy really wanted he’s lunch! ‘Er… Maybe’ I replied depending on the deal you offer against mine! This would be one of the biggest purchases of my life to date excluding my house and he wanted a decision and commitment from me in the first 2 minutes? The guy hadn’t even told me his name and he wanted me to hand over tens of thousands of pounds! My friend who was with me just looked at me in disbelief. I got in the car and he told me that this car was ‘as good as it gets!’ and ‘it has my name stamped all over it!!’

We all soon returned to the sales office after he had inspected my car. We sat down I was expecting to get a price for my car as he tapped away on his computer. After a couple of moments he looked at me said ‘how much have you got to put in to the deal?’ ‘Well give me a price for my car against your car first and we’ll go from there’ I said. ‘I tell you now’ he said your car isn’t going to cover half the cost of that one so I need to know how much you want to put in to the deal!’ How bloody rude I thought I should’ve walked out then and there looking back! Why the hell do you need to know how much money I have in the bank before you will give me a simple price on my car? Needless to say he came back with a part ex price of a rusty second hand Austin Allegro! If I’d known we were that far apart I’d have brought my passport! After that the conversation just went down hill he kept telling me that my car wasn’t worth much going up by £250 a time then told me that the car I was buying was a cheap car!

It was a horrible experience to be honest and one that I wouldn’t expect to get from a dealer such as Land Rover when spending that sort of money! Oh and on the test drive I enquired if he has an RRS? ‘No!’ he said ‘I’ve got better things to spend my money on!!’ Can you believe this guy?

It was such a shame it is a lovely car, I was up half the night before getting insurance quotes etc ready to buy it the next day!

I will never return to that dealer! I really hope that they are doing well because they just lost a lot of money which I will be spending else where now! Cheers Laurence.

Could you imagine if we all ran our own business' like that. It makes me so Angry.

Did you get his name? The sales guys at my dealership are always on training courses and to be honest you cant knock anything they do sales wise.

It just goes to show that you buy from a person and not a company.

This is what I think about most luxury car sales people (apart from my LRdeale and obviously a few others)..

The jumped up sales guys are used to selling cars in excess of 40K so they think that because they deal with high net worth vehicles and customers every day that it almost tricks them into thinking that they can afford luxuries like that. Hence the attitude. 

Sounds very similar to my own expierience at Lookers Chelmsford about six weeks ago. I won't be going back eithier.

Bad very bad by the sounds of it

Maybe LPR could obtain the car with it been on a lookers forecourt


I was in a Vauxhall dealership yesterday and saw a corsa for the wife, she doesn't go far so doesn't need a luxury car as it would be a waste of money, anyway i asked how much a car was as I was interested in the 0% deal "about £200 a month" comes the answer "is that just the one payment or would that be over a year" was my response which resulted in a blank look, I asked how much the car was not it's monthly price based on a unknown trade in or deposit

I thought I was asking a simple question, obviously not

If I run my business like that Foxy I wouldn't have a business thats for sure!

The guy gave me he's card and if he worked for me I'd give him his cards by the way of a P45

I was fuming to as Chelmsford is sort of my 'local' dealer. I was given a card as well but it went in the bin.

In contrast I was in Cornwall a few days later and called in at Riders in Truro. Extremely helpful staff, given the demonstrator for a few hours (I could have had it for the day if I had wanted but didn't have the time ). A real pleasure to deal with but they didn't have the spec I was looking for and at the time I was waiting on the sale of our motorhome and smart car (now gone).

Riders are 300 miles from me but I'd happily go back to them rather than up the road to Chelmsford.

On the whole I've found Lookers to be a bit of a let down.

+1 Third RRS is coming from them Oct ish - will post on that sometime - Let LPR sort you out, worth the drive

Ive had bad experiences with both Chelmsford and when they had a site in Hadleigh, I had been using Hadleigh for 15 years or so (3 brand new and several used) and went to them for the RRS back in 2006 with checkbook in hand and a quote from another dealer, the reaction I got was stratling, he told me I was a liar and that no way could the other dealer do it for that price and if he could he would buy 10 from him there and then, so I gave him the DP'S number and told him to ring him on condition I got commision from this 10 car deal, he then tried to tell me they must be imports so I asked him outright if he wanted to sell me one and he said no, so Webbers of Basingstoke got my money
Chelmsford were no better but I was already discusted with Lookers in general it was no surprise?
However I do intend to give LPR a bite of the apple when Im ready to upgrade

It's amazing how different branches of the same dealership differ in their management. I have dealt with James at LPR and he was fantastic. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Thank you for your apologies in these matters.

I don’t think that this isolated matter can be a reflection on the whole company and all of the employees with in it. The guy was obviously having a bad day and we all have them! It was just a shame he picked that day of all days to have one! On reflection I certainty do not want to start a mud slinging campaign against your company after all the hard work that you put in on this forum to give Lookers a good name. I’m sure I speak for all of us when I say we appreciate you & LPR for being here. Once again thank you!
