Driving advice in RRS for a newbie

HI there this is my first post. I took delivery of my rrsport today.
I have never had a 4 by 4 before. Ive gone from a escort bonus to a bmw 320 to a 911 to a maserati gt. Now i have a new baby and a lot of luggage requirements and as such lumped for the best 4 by 4 from what research i carried out.
I love the car i think its beautiful and luxurious.

However i keep getting told that i have to drive it totally different to a normal car. I appreciate the handling of a maserati gran turismo is phenominal but are RRsports really that bad?

I have been told it will topple if i do what i did in my former cars?

Im a bit worried now as no matter how much i google for advice i just keep getting red letter day type driving experiences for off roading.

I need to know if there are any good tips for driving a 4 by 4 and not toplling it.

Sorry to be on the ask so early but i hope that someone has a second that they can help.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to the site, don't be scared off by what you are being told, by all means take good advice, as you know its no sports car despite it been called a sport Laughing take a bit of time to get used to its size and weight before you put any of your family at risk, you will soon realize it is quite a capable vehicle and can be thrown around if you know its limits Shocked If you can get yourself on a LR experience day, they are advertised now and again for free, you will learn more about your motor than you would of ever known, just drive it, get used to it and start enjoying it Thumbs Up

ok thanks. When people say corners... do they mean like 90 degree corners? I have literally swopped my maserati this am and took it for one last drive of its life. The difference between this am and this pm were polar opposites. I dont think i took it over 55mph today as was so wary of the " roll".

I will look into one of those courses. Thank you very much for the reply.

My wife rolled our Discovery on spilled diesel doing 30mph and since then she won't drive my RRS's despite the fact that I have taken her up the hill at quite a high speed to show her the margin of error she has with the sophisticated set up compared with a 200tdi.
You'd have to drive really badly to get a recent RRS to get any where near toppling it,main thing as normal is just never to lift off mid corner as that will get scarey. MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.

Sorry, what do you mean by lift off mid corner?

Im sorry but is this post for real? Shocked

First off yes you cant compare a Range Rover with a maserati - in the same way you cant compare a maserati with a ford focus.

Second - did you really not test drive it??! surely you got a feel for the car then - are we talking a new 2011 model, in which case there is no reason you shouldnt feel planted and stable - as you must be the first person i have ever hear talking about this!!

Third - ive had a derestricted Range Rover Sport at 165mph on a certain test track and yes the jags and astons were overtaking, but there was nothing wrong with the sport around the corners or in a straight line

We have a number of cars and the sport is the most planted and "on rails car" out of them; personally the porsche 911 didnt seem any more planted than the sport, but in turn the sport can take country lanes at 50 and 60 with much more stability than the new fiesta we have which is probably a third of its weight

Fourth - you cant really compare a disco and rrs; the difference between them in ride I think is marked, given the difference between them isnt all that large.

Fifth - i think a lot of this is down to normal driving ability; maybe a run with an LRE instructor or some advanced driving lessons?

Whilst i havent fully articulated it here - there really shouldnt be any major issues - you drive according to the road - and car conditions, then the speed limit, the majority of roads in good clear conditions with a fully serviced etc (inc tyres) sport is more than capable of handling the road.
NB as with every road and corner - you cant go flat out in all of them. Mike

It is for real yes. I was told by more than one person (ok 2!!!) that it is a completly different way of driving a 4 by 4 to a NON 4 by 4... not a 4 by 4 and a maserati. Its just they said you cant do what you do in a normal car in a 4 by 4. I guess they are wrong or possibly talking about former perhaps less advanced 4 by 4s?

I appreciate from this thread that so long as i am not unstupidly reckless then there is no reason to worry.

Re test drive... yes i did test drive it.. i drove it for about 15 mins around north london at speeds of up to about 25 mph as there was nowhere that was not congested.

I appreciate the help and responses. I am sorry if it sounded a little stupid but i thought this would be teh best place to ask my questions.

i took it out again today btw and i really like it . Its a 2010 model. not a 2011 model.

Try to think of it the other way around, in other words what would happen if you had the masserati off road? It simply would not work, they are worlds apart. the don't do the same thing because they are poles apart. Check out the depreciation for one thing the RR is solid in comparison. Why would you want to try and go that fast around corners that quick. I have have driven a 911 and I also have a CL65, totally different and I know it and accept it. The RR is truly a wonderful car to drive and own but don't try and thnk of it of anything other that what it is!!!!

Hey Sky Blue.

The only way you will roll your RRS is if you drive like a complete and utter turd...

The RRS is great and Ady does sometimes push his to extremes, but if you are a safe and able driver, then you should be quick to respond of the questions that the RRS will throw at you.

Just remember that you are a Daddy now, and your driving like your 21 days are now over! ! (unless you are 21, but I doubt that )

Just relax and enjoy your baby and oh enjoy being a daddy too !

Foxy xx Thumbs Up Smile

If you've just bought your RRS from a L/R dealer, ask for a free LRE voucher and book yourself into Eastnor, preferably when the weather is appalling. Then you will be amazed at what this vehicle is capable of. Most people who drive RRSs and Discos are unaware of the capabilities of their vehicles and Defenders are always perceived to be the best. I guarantee you'll be awestruck! Thumbs Up
