Transmission fault

Upon starting up the sport this morning got a transmission fault message on the display centre Sad .

Did the usual switch off engine wait a few minutes then restarted and hey presto the message was gone, I thought oh well just one of the few characteristics the RRS has.

Just about to start to drive off with my hand on the gear stick I pressed the brake pedal before and heard a clicking noise everytime I pressed the brake pedal, as if a switch is being turned on and off. When the brake pedal was pressed the gear stick was giving the clicking noise at exactly the same time and a little bit of movement was noticed on the gear stick, this happened in all gears selected apart from drive Confused .

I then proceeded to drive it back home and no change to the drive can be noticed.

Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Its been booked into LPR for Monday, just hoping that it is nothing major. Still covered by warranty but hoping that it can be sorted out quickly. TDV8 HST STORNOWAY ON A 58

Yes it happens to mine too, nothing to worry about, its the locking machanism unlocking when you put your foot on the brake to engage gear, its to stop anyone, kids mainly selecting drive without pressing the brake first. Safety device. Thumbs Up

I think what you're hearing and feeling is the "Shift Interlock Solenoid" working. This has been discussed before...

Shift Interlock Solenoid

The shift interlock solenoid is located on the side of the selector lever assembly. The solenoid operates two locking levers which engage in the lower lever and lock it in the Park (P) and Neutral (N) positions. When the ignition is on or the engine is running, the solenoid is de-energised and prevents the lever from moving.

When energised, by the depression of the footbrake, the solenoid is energised and the selector lever may be moved from the 'P' position. If the selector lever is left in the 'N' position for more than 800m/s the solenoid will be energised and the selector lever will become locked in the 'N' position. To move the selector lever from the 'N' position in this condition the footbrake must be applied. This prevents the selector lever from being moved to the 'D' or 'R' position unintentionally and the application of the brakes also prevents the vehicle 'creeping' when the gear is engaged.

Movement of the selector lever from the 'P' or 'N' positions is also prevented if the TCM senses the engine speed is above 2500 rev/min, even if the brake pedal is depressed.

Laughing Laughing

The clicking is quite silent but you can "feel" the click if you hold the knob while pressing the brakes. It's always been there, not to worry.

One word of caution though - the solenoid is not meant to be energised for too long, hence it only works when the gearlever is in "P" or "N" and you will depress the footbrake if you want to move. So if you're at the traffic lights, the gear in"D" and you're depressing the footbrake, the solenoid is not energise. Everything is fine. However, if you move the gearlever to "P" or "N" and still depress the footbrake, this is going to unnecessarily energise the solenoid for a long time (until the lights turn green). The chances of the solenoid going kaput very early is very high then.

This has happened to some members here in the early days.
