Intermittent Key Problem

lo all,

My keys have developed similiar problems....

My key first of all suddenly stopped working, but every now and again it works again.

Now 2 weeks later my wifes key has started doing the same thing which seems too much of a coincidence to me.

Is there something I have done wrong for this to happen?

They do work but are very intermittent and erratic at opening and locking the car.

Thanks

James

The keys are self charging so its very unlikely they would both die at the same time. Also im aware that if your key batt is low, say if you havn't used that key for months when you put it in the ignition you should get a key batt low warning on the dash....i think.

It seems that you don't have that problem so my reply may have been pretty useless lol.

Yeh the keys are used daily so that isnt the problem I am having.

Is it possible to open the keys to find out if something has come loose or something?

Any other ideas?

Noooo, i think they are seald so you cant tamper and have to pay the £300 plus for your stealer to sort them out. Sorry to put you on a downer. I doubt very much that something has come loose in the key let alone both at the same time. Do they do it everywhere you are or just at home???

When you say it works sometimes, what works or doesn't? Are you saying it just doesn't lock or unlock the car sometimes?

You probably know this but just in case. The key and the remote are totaly seperate, ie the key bit is just an old fasioned key in a fancy box and the remote is basically just an alarm remote that unlocks the doors. As far as i know there are no special chips or fancy immobilisers. If your fob doesn't unlock the car it will still start, am i right??

I think it is nothing to do with either of your keys, its to do with the reciever in the car. Check that the carpet in the drivers side isn't wet. Ive heard the reciever for the alarm can get damp and the contacts can corode and cause this problem. Long shot but worth a look. Either way i don't think its the keys.

Iceland

Receiver seems to be the issue when two keys start failing- read this thread on the sister site.

Thanks for the comments guys....

When I say it works sometime and sometimes it doesnt, I mean sometimes it will open the car first time and sometimes I have to stand there keep pressing it and hope that it opens. Likewise when I go to lock the car.

How can I test the receiver then? Where is it located?
