fuel consumption on rrs 2011 diesel

I have had my new rrs 4 weeks now and the average fuel consumption has been between 22-24.It is mostly driven around town but had a long run (250 miles)last week mostly on motorways but the consumption was the same. Will this improve as the engine runs it?.

22-24 is normal for the diesel RRS - outstanding if it's a petrol RRS though! Wink 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Also if it is driven mainly in town the gearbox ECU may need some re-educating to make it go into 6th gear if you don't get the speed above 55ish most of the time. Once you get up to 55/60, move the gear stick to the left into Sport mode and then notch it forward once and the digital readout on the dash should show 6, come back out of Sport mode (which locks out 6th) into D and she should stay in sixth. Everytime for the next few runs where you are getting up to 55, try manually shifting into 6th and then the ECU will get the message and do it automatically. I had this problem when I took delivery of my FFRR, it had led a life of indolence trickling through London traffic for a few months and wouldn't go up to 6th with out manual intervention - now it shifts up by itself at 50-55mph with no manual shifting 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Is it a new one??

If so you could be getting higher returns.

Mines floating around 27/28 at the moment - but its slowly rising as it increases with miles - book for the motorway is around 34, im expecting around 31/32 Mike

My average over 1500 miles on A and B roads and round town, no motorway driving is 27.5 mpg.

Of course it would help if you mentioned which year and model you're referring to.

Sorry tigertrout, didn't read the heading. Off to Specsvers once I find my glasses. Embarassed

Next time you go on a run, reset the computer and you will fine it is doing more mpg, but if you leave the computer it averages the mpg over you entire journey a+b roads + your motorway run and you will find by resetting your computer before you join the motorway it gives you a better mpg figure as it is averaging your new reset at higher speeds. Thumbs Up

....... and don't start checking up on the fuel computer, wished I hadn't!

I know there was a thread about this some time ago but would like to hear anyone else's recent experiences, just in case something is wrong with my RRS (3.0D 2010). It all started for a few months back after a trip to the Lake District that used more fuel than I had expected. Since, I have been comparing the average mpg of the trip B fuel computer, reset on each diesel fill up, to the actual miles done between fill ups and the actual diesel used.

The average mpg on the fuel computer is consistently 6mpg more than the actual mpg............ is this normal?

On mainly motorway I get 25.4mpg (between 70-80 mph .... at least that's what the speedo said!) but the fuel computer average read 31.4mpg. Around town and short journeys, the actual was 20.6mpg but the fuel computer showed 26.4mpg.

As someone else said, you don't buy a car like this and start looking at fuel consumption, which I accept and I don't expect to get the manufacturers quoted stats but I do expect Land Rover to build a fuel computer that doesn't lie!

I came from a BMW M5 so not used to high mpg ....... but at least the fuel computer was accurate.

Is this just my RRS? Sad

agreed, the mpg on the computer can be slightly optimistic....

They vary... but most are 2 or 3 mpg over the true value... RRS gone

Its all about the way it calculates it to how you calculate it using actual values

Ive had a day returning around 28.9 Mike

..... well my RRS certainly doesn't calculate it on fuel used and miles driven!

I would not expect the fuel computer to be consistently 25%-30% out over a tank of fuel ..... no point in having one. It's also not a matter of sometimes it's more than actual and sometimes less which eventually averages out. Not in my case anyway.

Its mainly because they use percentage of fuel in the tank based on the inaccurate float

Similar to planes which is why us pilots dont trust fuel guages in aircraft and do proper maths (ok get people to do proper maths) Mike
