Certainly... I am a lucky and through my job (running the GRRC at Goodwood) I get to drive many fabulous cars regularly. GTR My first encounter with the GTR was at it's European launch at the nurburgring. I am a fan of cars which react to being driven with delicacy and some degree of skill.... I was immediately impressed with the quality of the GTR (for a Nissan!) and was looking forward to a 1 day programme which inlcluded; driving the car on the local roads (almost as good as the nordschleife), using the excellent training grounds which include low friction surfaces, an ice hill, a kick plate and other areas, some laps of the nordschleife (some with us driving and others with some nutter from Japan behind the wheel), and some time on the GP circuit. In all disciplines, the car did impress me with its massive speed, acceptable comfort, impressive grip and crazy electronics but - and for me this is a big but - I never felt excited by it. It's just too competent and does not involve the driver enough. The weight of the car probably has something to do with it - hence the need for soooo many electronic aids to make it perform so well - and also the massively wide front tyres rob the steering of any feel. My second encounter was a few weeks ago at the Festival of Speed press day when I was given the keys to the 2011 model GTR to run up the hill a few times with various Members of the press. The car has definitely improved - it's faster and felt a little bit lighter to drive but the steering still has very little feel.. 911 Turbo First encounter of a turbo was with Lord March's 996 turbo. The power delivery was every bit as savage as the GTR but it felt quicker even if it wasn't. It also had a manual 'box which I much prefer. I had driven plenty of 911s before, mostly 993 and 996 n/a cars and, although the steering was not quite as good as the 2wd cars, it still had loads of communication. It's also a car in which you have to learn how to extract it's maximum performance rather than the GTR which is very flattering but a bit dull. The more miles you cover in a 911, the more you learn how to drive it properly and counteract it's natural understeer characteristics using the brakes deep into corners to shift the balance of weight over the front axle. You can also get on the power much earlier out of a corner because of the massive grip at the rear. The Porsche is also much better built than the GTR and will hold onto it's value better (if you buy 2nd hand). I think it also carries a better image. Since the 996tt, I've driven all other 911 turbos and can absolutely guarantee that, if you decided to buy any of them (with the possible exception of the tiptronic cars), you will enjoy lower running costs (I once saw well over 30mpg on a run to Spa), and better reliability along with less attention from others - and you can tell people you own a Porsche, rather than a Nissan! Personally, I'd have neither of the above though.. For every day driving, I would take a 997.2 C2S with some choice options and enjoy the challenge of driving one of the best sorted cars available... Hope that helps! J |

Intresting read j, but i'm surprised the GTR didn't excite you though, didn't you try it with all the electronic aids switched off? Plato and Tiff took the GTR around a track on 5th gear last week one driving with all the aids on and the other driving with all the aids off, which do you think was fastest on a single lap? If you didn't see the program.

Yeah.. Drove the GTR with and without stuff on the GP track.. Still had rubbish steering feeling and it doesn't really switch everything off.. Just TC and ASR there's still loads of other stuff helping you round the corners. You can just spin the wheels and slide it. Sorry about the thread-jack too! |
