Japan moved 7 feet

I read that due to the recent earthquake in Japan the whole landmass of Japan has moved 7 feet west - if this is so surely everyones Sat Nav in their cars will be Censored , tell me if I'm wrong. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
2009 Alaska TDV8 - Gone and much missed.

your wrong

the sat nav provides your position relative to the earth using the wgs84 model not the other way about and not in relation to the position of japan, your position is from the satellites..and they havent moved

so effectively if you were in japan on a particular road...prior to the earthquake you would be registered in the right position..after the earthquake your position would be the same but the map under your position would have moved

dont be hard on yourself..its not being stupid, its a complex system with very complex maths behind it

did you know sat navs are very inaccurate in height, also it can be jammed, the timing can be adjusted to make everyones satnav apart from the militaries more inaccurate

Just coz Japan moved, doesn't mean we did! Don't get me started on plate tectonics but the oceanic crust between Japan and Chinese part of the Eurasian plate would have stretched a bit to take up the movement. Your satnav is safe but different GPS in Japan will show a difference. Whistle

Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Thought you were concerned peeps on the M25 might get lost! Whistle Whistle

ISTR once they disabled dithering on GPS then error on non-DGPS was 15m so they'll be fine. Mr. Green They might have more of an issue if they rebuild the roads in a different place. Whistle
