Airport extream

Hi guys.

Anyone got any experience with the "apple airport extream" setup on a non mac computer and home network??

I have a Bang and Olufse Beocenter 2300 (old system I know) which I thought would be quite good if I could wirelessly stream my iTunes library to. The B&O system has a 3.5m jack aux socket, so will work with the Airport express but I was wondering if anyone has set a wireless AirTunes network up. What are the good/bad points??

You can pick the units up fairly cheep for about £70 do it's affordable to give a bash IMO. The B&O system is in my conservatory, so is only starting to get used now the weather is getting better, but if this AirTunes is any good I'll get more units for my Zepplin and media centre then the whole house.

I was even considering getting some outdoor speakers (that look like rocks) for the patio, then can just sit outside on a summer evening and controll all my music using my phone/iPad.

So anyone had any experience with this?? Any advice??

Hi Tommy

I have a predominantly Mac based setup at home, but we do also have a couple of windows machines. I currently have 3 airport expresses, one hooked up to the speakers in my office, one to speakers in the family room/kitchen and one to the stereo. The airports just join the existing wireless network and then you configure them to share 'airtunes', the software that comes with the airports/downloaded from apple makes this a simple task. Connect speakers to the 3.5 jack and tell itunes to play to multiple speakers et voila, up and running.

The only issues are that you can only broadcast 1 tune at a time to all airports, it can't send different tunes to different airports. Also you will find that a microwave causes interference. You also need to have a computer running with itunes. I have tried to set up an itunes library on my NAS (which has an itunes server) to stream to my airports without a computer being turned on - I think this is impossible, certainly it is evading me at the moment. Twisted Evil

Once you have the computer on with itunes open you will be able to use your iPhone/iPad to control the system remotely. If you get an apple TV you can also stream movies from your computer (only movies in itunes in the correct format - iphone/iPad) to the TV and control this also by your phone/iPad

Cheers mate

so the computer with itunes has to be switched on, in order for it all to operate. Thats fair enough i suppose, so i would have to turn off the power down engery saving setting on the computer, if left for a set period of time.

Not much of an issue with the multi room play at the moment but agree this is a future pit fall, especially if the missus wants to listen to her pish, whilst i'm blasting out the cool tunes. haha i suppose this is something that Apple are working on and will release once sales start dropping on the current system.

cheers for the info mate.

glad to know it actually works !! saves me rebuilding the house to fit a Bang and Olufsen Masterlink.... however i would flippen adore that to bits if i had the cash. 08MY HSE 3.6 TDV8 Stornoway Grey, Twisted performance cat back... and shed loads of extras!!!

Just thinking about it. It may be possible to send different tunes to different speakers but the way that I can think of this would involve using multiple computers/devices. Currently you can use airplay from your iPhone/ipad to play to a certain set of speakers. I need to check on my network if this can also be done whilst the main computer streams to the other airports.
